Seems legit...Whenever I'm upset about social inequality and racist violence my go to move is to burn s**t. Preferably the homes and businesses of people unrelated to whatever incident threw me off. As for attacking icons of the past and retconing my immediate outrage so that it spills backwards in time? I'm all for it. F**k the past that never bothered me until now. Now is where it's at. Whatever we do though- let's not look in the mirror because personal accountability is super lame. Pick a target and burn it down. Rather progressive dontcha think? Great read sir.

I say what's done is done. YOU CANT REWRITE HISTORY
Pull down the statues _ tear up the history books
Don't teach the kids
OH DEAR
they are now making the same mistakes

Ole GW is next to be wiped off the books as being our first prez . . . too many slaves. When it was widely known he had a few slaves, that was okay. But now it's come out that he had HUNDREDS, so his residency in the white house needs to be wiped clean, thank you very much (so we can pretend we didn't have this disgusting history that we do indeed have!) No wonder I keep retreating back into my wilderness solitude & hating to return to the fomenting crowds! Great poem. Love your snarky dig about changing history . . . the implication being that we're doing damn nothing to change the present day! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

If one goes by the logic of the statue breakers then we might as well bring the whole human civilization down. It's basically built on inequity. Let the past stay in the past. If they have it in them then lets build a future absolutely devoid of inequality. To me it all feels like some kind of drama & hype. They should get over it. Well written sir!

I appreciate the visit my friend and the sentiment you left behind.. cheers..
being from backwoods B.C. I've never had much to do with statues, hardly a one to tear down around here but when I heard that Churchill's had been sprayed, it was a shock.
Thanks for taking the time and effort to write this and hopefully the unwarranted crazy will eventually stop, but!!!

I absolutely enjoy the way you bring the message to life here, examining the poetic form, the reader easily gets swept into the forumla that you use to pattern the flow, and we are taken on a journey down the poetic river. Excellent work!

you are far too kind my friend... thanking you is proving all too easy..
Glad you mentioned this. It reminds me of how shifty those Trafalgar Square lions look and just how inappropriate it is to have such roam-loving creatures set in stone.
I'm off to write a blog about it and see how many like minded individuals agree and are prepared to take action against this slightly skewed slant of what normal people would call an opinion.
Perhaps old and new can play a part in resolving this, bring back the stocks and make the vandals modern statues to replace those torn down.
Ps... Why do all bloggers look so constipated with indignant fury.?
Pps...I'll probably get hashtagged for this 😀

The tearing down of a statue commemorating and celebrating a seditionist traitor and pro slavery general that actively killed his fellow citizens for the sake of agrarian commerce. Is a far cry from the defacing of a churchill statue I am not super well versed in the United Kingdom's history and had no idea that Mr. Churchill was busy whipping runaway cotton pickers in the deep South:/ Well... the Bunny learns! When I read this title I immediately read it for I thought it was addressed to me I being the biggest fool that I know

I'm not that familiar with North American history, although I did watch Last of the Mohicans twice and my wife is a direct descendent of Jim Bowie he being her great great something grandfather ..
Anyway, it would seem that neither of us knows enough about the others history to make sweeping statements that might possibly cause offence .. The fact does remain though that everything is subjective, relative and might be perceived differently by different individuals, races and cultures.. I know what I consider to be both right and wrong and have no known prejudices as far as I am aware... I also recognise that regardless of race creed or ethnicity there are, have been and most probably always will be both good and bad...
Neither do I have a problem with groups of folk demonstrating .. that is an age old means of conveying dissatisfaction .. I understand there is safety and some anonymity in numbers.. what I am peed off about is the number of folk that use such gatherings to hide behind and take advantage of an opportunity to loot, cause unnecessary damage and vent their anger in other to me at least unacceptable ways.. I used Churchill as an example of someone who is variously perceived as a hero and great statesman, or something quite different.. some say he was behind some of the biggest blunders in both world wars.. he was also largely responsible for many other atrocities.. but hey.. he never whipped a single cotton picker as far as I am aware .. we tend to grow apples and hops down south ... I know we cant change history.. and even if we could, I'm not sure the world would necessarily be a better place.. I am on the other hand all for working together and learning from mistakes of the past to try and make the world a better, safer, and more accepting place for all regardless .. N:)

precisely my point Rob.. everyone makes mistakes.. the nature of them often reflecting the time and times.. and the very nature of it .. the nature of progressive cultural mindsets is very real.. there will always be exceptions though and at this precise moment, I think as a species.. we as yet have a long way to go
We can not change history. We can only change the future. I am beyond upset about all the defacing and tearing down of statues. You said it so well here, Neville. Lydi**

After hearing of the defacing of Churchill's statue, I was appalled. I sincerely doubt any of the vandals were familiar with the events of the summer of 1940. Here, our vandals are all for getting rid of statues of General Lee, even though he freed his father-in-law's slaves and gave up everything he had ever worked for to defend his his family and friends. When the backlash comes and their favored politicians are voted out, the defacement crew may regret their actions.

I didn't know that myself John.. thanks.. you are most probably right .. folk very often go off on one without thinking it through.. and by that I mean either their motivations, or the consequences.. it doesn't help when the pull of the crowd is too much for the ties of any pre-existing moral constraint... assuming there were any in the first place... there was summat else I was going to say.. but I seem to have lost it... History, it's what it says on the tin. We would all love to change some of our history but sadly the deed was done, it became history that day and kicking the crap out of some statue won't change things. Maybe if we just put statues up for 50 years and then review them this lunacy wouldn't happen. Catch anyone pulling my statue down though, be hell to pay.
