This one is mysterious. I’m probably trying too hard. I can think of a few kinds of darkness, but that darkness that involves others in our minds can be the deepest. Because there are certain things that can never be resolved. When it is our own darkness we have ways and means, but darkness imposed by someone else is unpredictable.
Now I’ve talked a lot about your author’s note. But I haven’t really said anything meaningful, have I. Just taking another look. I’m grasping...but, I’m thinking of the peace one can find when there is peace with the self. The ability to become non-reactive and cease craving stimulation or interaction with the past is a moment of triumph.
I feel the poem is addressing the past which seeks to be part of the present but is not welcome. Something powerful in that rebuke. Keeping the upper hand.
I’ll stop trying to solve it and just appreciate what you’ve done with the words. Excellent bit of contemplation.
killer opening Vs 1&2 ... there is mystery V4 L3 ... there is a conundrum in your speaker .. moments of safety from punishment and hurt ...freed from the want and need ... yet keeps those moments in draft ..considered sin ...
i love the perspective of "..behind these eyes" ... your antagonist could be the muse ... but the poet would never consider Her musings shared a sin ... hmmmmmm could be some other human antagonist .. but the puzzle remains ... hmmmmmmmm read this more than several times Neville .. so you hooked me good! you "note" is also inspiring ... truly all kinds of "darkness" to afflict and inspire ... top o' the mahrnin' good friend!

thanking you ever so much dear friend.... stay safe and well and truly....
It’s awes when anything the other does, in word or dead ceases to affect our spirit and they lose all power on us. It’s a moment of victory that you describe here and it gives me immense satisfaction reading and going back to my own such personal victories.
Hello my friend! How are you? I hope you and yours are keeping safe and well in these days of pestilence.
Much love ~ Rania

This is so touching, I am deeply moved! I imagine your own situation, which I only know by bits & pieces, but also I think about when I lost my ability to walk . . . many hikes still to go within these wobbly pegs! This poem stands for all the abilities we seemingly lose as we grow older. This is for the young'uns who laugh at the thought that old people still have amorous desires. There may be snow on the rooftop (according to an old folk song) but there's still a rumbling volcano down below! (((ROAR))) Fondly, Margie

Sometimes we give all our attention to what we thought was important, only to find that there was something more important that we didn't pay enough attention to because of the not so important thing that wasn't, despite us thinking it was.
I need a lie down now to uncorkscrew my mind after that 😀
The mind can be a right sod sometimes, forgetting what's important at times and not letting you forget what you hoped to forget.
What was I saying?
