Old Salt

Old Salt

A Poem by Neville
"

This guy fought in two world wars & according to my Father, his back pack weighed more than he did

"

Old Salt

Even from a distance

It wasn’t hard to see

His captain’s cap

The reddened eyes

And makings of a tear

All by himself the old man sat

His back against the wall

An empty glass shook in his hand

And at his feet

His faithful friend lay dreaming

Salt of the earth. It's guys like that old captain that allowed this country to keep its freedom. Not a hard man at all, but one bound by duty. That tear in the eye says much to me as does his relationship with his dog. This guy may have been a loner, but what a contribution he made for the many. You honour him with your words Neville, as you also honour your Dad's memory. Your lines always have such an impact and make the reader think beyond the box. That is what good poetry does.

A beautiful piece, I could picture this man sat on a rusty bench over a pier, having his usual sea side scotch by a hound that lay still..I can also picture his shiny walking stick clung to the bench by its side :)
