Somme Say

Somme Say

A Poem by Neville
"

Approaching the eleventh hour on 11.11.2013 I think we need to remember all those who made the greatest sacrifice of all - Here's to all those who did just that between 1914 and 1918

"

Somme Say

At precisely 07.28 a.m on July 1st 1916

A piece of earth the size of a football pitch

And half as deep again

Was lifted into the air they said at least 4,000 feet

For a moment a portion of France was liberated

At a total cost of only 15,000 souls Somme say

Let us Never Forget

The pain is what can be felt in your words foremost. The catastrophic memories imprinted on this page forever as I take in the time, the event and its killing implications. Freedom? At what cost? Each life is priceless and we're talking 15,000 here. Takes some time for it to sink in but settle it will not and must not. It must keep disturbing us always....

It is only in such starkness, that we see the benefit of history being taught to our kids today, that reverberates so loudly still, that we must never be allowed to forget mans stupidity, and mans greatest triumph. It is an unthinkable that we could see this happen again, but there is always a but when it comes to the unbelievable.
We will remember what they sacrificed. I only hope we learn.

I hope so too, thank you Lorry... Neville
You show rather than tell with these words. The size and depth of that football pitch being blown to pieces along with 15000 souls is almost beyond comprehension. 4000 feet into the air is hard to fathom, and yet it happened. Your directness here Neville works very well. We must never forget the sacrifices made by some so we have our freedom today. Good morning on this first miserable and wet November day.

This is beautiful Neville and thought provoking without being overdramatic. You state the facts and the poem is all the more powerful for it. It is such a sombre time of the year and yet it remains so important to remember it I think. Shelley
