Fitting In, Chapter One.A Chapter by Little Miss Strange
I slammed the taxi door shut behind me, and tugged on my suitcase, its wheels bouncing along the dirt road. I looked up at the rather large building. It looked more like a castle then an academy. The dirt path was long and winding, and it led up to the front door. It was huge, and it looked like it was made of steel. I gently pulled on the marble doorknob, and it was a lot lighter then expected. Then I realized that it was being pulled open from the other side. The door swung open, revealing a woman.
She had bronze hair that fell to her waist. Her eyes were the color of sapphires, and were large for her small face. She was much taller than me, I had to crane my neck to look in her eyes. She gave me a wide smile. "Hello. You must be Allura. Welcome to Crystal Lake Academy. I'm Principal Alexandria, but Miss Alex is just fine," she said sweetly. I smiled, and shook her hand. "Thank you, Miss Alex," I said. She ushered me inside. "Let's go to the living room, shall we?" she led me down a tile hall, with paintings of landscapes along the way. We entered a vast room, with bookshelves along the west wall. There was a fireplace, with a burning fire in it. Above the fireplace was a portrait of a young woman, probably in her twenties. There was something about her eyes that disturbed me, but I didn't know what. Sitting in one of the beanbags, was a girl around my age. She was stunning, with chestnut brown hair that reached a bit past her shoulders. Her eyes were the unmistakable shade of violet, which surprised me. Probably color contacts, I thought. "This is my niece, Miss Scarlet Martin," Miss Alex said, introducing us. Scarlet stood up, and walked over to me. "Hello," she said, smiling. "What's your name?" "I'm Allura," I said. It was silent for a few moments. "Scarlet? Could you show Allura around?" Miss Alex asked. "I'm quite busy." "Of course. Come on, Allura," Scarlet said, then motioned me towards the door. I followed like an obedient lapdog. Allura? This place creeps me out. I heard in my head. I nodded. That's Damien. He's a ghost. I've been hearing him in my head since I was five. He's not creepy or anything. He died when he was fifteen, in a car crash. He's my best friend. But no one could possibly know that I hear the voices of the dead. That would be one way ticket to the cuckoo hospital. "Well, this school has some rules. First, never go into the bushlands. Those are the woods outside of the school. Second, never go into the reservations," Scarlet said. I tilted my head. "Reservations?" I asked. Scarlet nodded. "It's where these six boys live. They're not allowed in the academy, but they still go." Scarlet smiled mischievously. "I visit them sometimes, but don't tell my aunt!" She showed me my dorm. It had two sets of bunkbeds, a plain wooden dresser, and a window looking out to the bushlands. "I'm your roommate, lucky you," Scarlet said. I placed my suitcase on the bed. I noticed that on the wall, there was that same portrait of the woman with the creepy eyes. "Who is that?" I asked, pointing at the painting. Scarlet shrugged. "No clue. Its been there forever." she said. Weird. Damien said. Not as weird as me. I thought. Then maybe this school is just right for you, he said, and I looked at the portrait again. Maybe. © 2010 Little Miss StrangeAuthor's Note
