We're All The Same

We're All The Same

A Poem by Neurosis

We’re all the same
Says the woman in bed
The man pacing back and forth
Shaking off the voices in his head

We come from different places
Different names
Different faces

If only I never touched that stick of death
I could be home loving the friends
And family that I have left

I never thought it would be me
She says
Over to the man across the room
While the music plays

Anything to distract him from the bad news
After a visit to the doctor revealing
Something too horrible to be true

I pushed it away for many years
He thinks to himself
Trapped in the torment of his inner hell
I trusted that man
And every intention
But there was one thing he never shared
And forgot to mention

Now we’re both destined for the grave
Like everyone else
It’ll never happen to me
Remains on the shelf
Mocking the hardened veterans of reality
Like a vagabond with a bachelor’s degree

We’re all the same, they forgot to mention
Just a matter of time
Before the illusion’s ascension
