The Girl From the GapA Story by Neil PBoy meets girl, a demonic child girl that lives in gaps in your house and wants to drag you to hell...We
return from the cinema laughing and joking, the inevitable bravado after a
midnight horror screening. I bid my friends goodbye at my door and wave them
off down the street, they yell taunts about sleeping with the lights on and
checking under my bed. I
live alone, the house was cold and dark but this isn't some Scrooge style manor, so I flick on all the lights and heating, then head to the fridge to grab a drink. As the fridge door swings open the light in the kitchen blows out and I
jump out my skin at the bang of the bulb filament breaking. I laugh at my own
unease, that movie must have got me more on edge than I thought. The
bulb can wait until morning, I just want a drink and to sit and watch some TV
until I fall asleep. I move into the living room and sit down on my long grey
sofa, man I love how comfy this sofa is, time to watch some cartoons and forget
about demon girls crawling out of the woodwork to rend my flesh… … I
must have fallen asleep, the house is freezing, dark and the TV is off, a power
cut perhaps? An incessant dripping sound fills the house, I grab my phone for
light and check the taps in the bathroom but they are all off. My torches light
does not extend far and it casts flickering shadows which reflect off the
bathroom mirror. I start to look into the mirror but the movie flashes into my
head and I quickly avert my eyes. Laughter
again, wait did I laugh? I’m sure I heard laughter but it sounded different, childlike.
I shake my head to clear the stupid thoughts and head to the fuse box which
yield success, the lights come on and my nervousness begins to subside. I
won’t be able to sleep now, so I sit back on the sofa and reach forward to grab
the remote. Out the corner of my eye I see my reflection in the black screen, I
look down to the remote and back at the TV and start suddenly, in the gap of
the cushions behind me is a face. My
heart almost explodes with yet another rush of adrenaline, just my imagination
in the night but the face is looking at me, and I’m staring back at her, the
sound of giggling laughter echoes through my head. The
lights flicker and go out, cold silence fills the room, the house now as peaceful
as the grave. © 2018 Neil PAuthor's Note
