Chapter OneA Chapter by NefChapter One for Fort Davis
“I’m going to miss waking up to this,” I said taking a
sip from my freshly brewed coffee.
“To what? Crappy coffee and stale bagels?” my best friend, Chanel, laughed. “No you dork, walking around the city. Being able to what I want, when I want.” I said spreading my arms out to the side taking in the smell of Manhattan. “I feel so bad for you Honey,” she said wrapping her frail arms around my body. Do you think that they even have malls?” I stopped in my tracks to glance at her- just barley catching the grimace washed over her freshly painted face. “As much as I’d love to reassure you, probably not,” I said smiling up at her. “We should get to school, Chuck will be ‘very disappointed in us’ if we’re late again,” Chanel said waving down a taxi. Two stopped in front of us and we climbed into the nearest one. “Dalton School, East 89th,” I said taking out some money and my phone, “It’s going to be so weird not to see you every day,” she said pulling down her very short dress exposing a little less thigh. “I don’t even know how I could go from one of the best private schools in the country to a public school,” I groaned, “I wish you could stay at my place,” she said pulling out her phone putting it on camera mode. “Yeah, I can’t believe Caroline and Hudson said I need to be ‘more cultured’ even though we live in one of the most cultured cities in the world.” I groaned, “I know and what do you even do in Texas,” she asked as we pulled up to the school. We paid the cab driver and quickly climbed out. As soon as we entered the halls and walked to our first hour. English honors was one of my favorite classes besides honors World History. “I can’t wait until I’m 18,” Chanel whispered as we walked into the classroom, “Chuck isn’t even that good looking, and he works on a teacher’s salary,” I said sitting down at my desk, “Are you kidding, he’s gorgeous,” she said sitting down next to me. “You can think what you want but he’s nine years older than you,” I laughed as he came into the room, “Ugh! He is so hot,” she groaned as he walked up to us, “Nice to see you on time. After a year, you finally learned time management,” he smirked at Chanel, and walked to his desk at the front of the classroom, “He smirked at me. Why can’t I be older?” she complained, and I laughed. After a few minutes of her talking about how hot she thought Chuck was, the bell rang. After about seven hours of our final day of sophomore year, Chanel and I went back to my house. As soon as we opened the door we walked to my room. I set my cream colored tote bag next to my computer and sat on my desk chair, “Don’t you have to pack for Texas,” she said taking her heels off and setting her bag next to mine. “Yeah,” I groaned as the front door opened, “Cassie Elizabeth Owens, are you packed?” Caroline called as she walked up to my room, “I’m packing right now,” I said standing up and taking my heels off, “Remember you are leaving tomorrow afternoon, but since you’ll probably want to say bye to all of your friends, you should start packing now.” She said walking to my giant window, “Yeah, I’ll start now,” I said walking to my closet and getting my largest suitcases. Chanel and I spent the next several hours of packing up all of my things into five large suitcases. “This is making me really sad,” Chanel said as we looked around my now empty room which looked very bland, “I haven’t seen my room like this since before we moved in,” I said, “What am I going to do without you?” she said as we laid on the bed, “I’m going to miss you so much!” I groaned, “You were supposed to be at my first runway show,” she said, “And you were supposed to be at my first book signing,” I laughed and she joined in. “We should do something tonight!” she said jumping up from my bed, “Yes! There’s a huge party at Blake’s since it’s finally summer,” I said grabbing my heels and bag, she did the same and we touched up our hair and makeup. I left a note for Caroline and Hudson and we quickly walked a couple of blocks to Blake’s house. Once we got there both of the doors opened and it felt like all eyes were on us, “What’s a girl gotta do to get a drink around here,” Chanel asked and Lucy walked over to us, “Come with me,” she said grabbing our hands leading us to the drinks. After about three drinks I felt a little buzz, “It totally sucks that you’re moving,” Blake said handing me another drink, “I don’t know how I’ll survive there,” I slurred, “Oh Hon, I’m so sorry,” she said patting me on the shoulder. After several drinks and hours of dancing with random guys from school I finally stumbled my way home. I unlocked the door and both my parents were waiting in the family room, watching some random sitcom on TV, “How many drinks?” Caroline asked not looking from the flat screen, “Like 7 or 8,” I shrugged taking off my heels, “Drink water, naked juice, and put ice on your head while you sleep.” Hudson said as he stood up to go get me a drink, “Why?” I slurred, “It’ll help you sober up, and help your hangover tomorrow,” he said and I nodded chugging a huge glass of water and a small bottle of Green Machine Naked juice. After I finished my drinks I jumped into the shower. After my long, hot shower I changed into a pair of men’s boxers and a pink tank top. I made sure everything was packed and I walked out onto my balcony looking out at the city. “How bad are you going to miss this?” I heard my neighbor, Trent, asked looking over at me from his balcony, “On a scale of 1-10, eleven,” I laughed walking closer to him kind of stumbling over my own feet, “This is the only time we really connected,” he said. “Yeah,” I said looking out at the city, “I’m going to miss you,” I said, “Me too,” he said, “But I should go to bed, it’s almost 3am and you seem a little drunk. Are you going to be ok?” he asked. “I have no clue,” I said honestly grabbing his hand over the bar that was separating us. “You’re a really special girl you know that,” he said and I blushed, “I’m so glad we’re friends,” I said and I leaned over the bar to hug him and kiss him on the cheek, “I’ll see you tomorrow before you leave, yeah?” he blushed and I nodded before we both walked back into our rooms. Once I got into my room I quickly climbed into my bed and fell into a deep sleep. “Cassie, we need to tell you something,” Hudson said as I took a sip from my coffee, “Yeah, what’s up,” I said, “Your mother and I have decided we want to travel the world. See all of the famous landmarks, set up some new companies. Go international you know,” he said and I nodded adjusting my blazer and slipping on my heels for school. “Ok, so when are we leaving, and how long will we be gone, because I still have school,” I said checking my email, “Well, the thing is… you won’t be going with us,” Caroline said, “So, you two will be going around the world without your only child?” I said finally paying attention to what they’re saying, “Look, we love you. You’re our daughter but we need our alone time,” Caroline said and Hudson rubbed my hand as comfort, “So you’re just letting me stay alone from now on?” I asked getting excited, “Oh no. You’ll be staying with your Aunt Brittany in Texas,” Caroline said. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
