The Road Itself (Age 17)

The Road Itself (Age 17)

A Poem by Andy Hackett
"

The road is life and the poem talks about the choices you make in life and possible consequences, that nothing is certain and you have to take chances. Sometimes, however, these chances you take are enough to crush you.

"

Feelings are not infinite, there's a beginning, there's an end,
Each one comes and stays 'til the road's next bend,

The road itself is terminal, the vehicle will soon stop,
The passenger may even onto a nearby plane hop.

Where they go we can't be sure. Some spiritual quest?
Or maybe the road's end can even mean a place to rest?

One day light shone, you felt a feeling so pure,
And felt you knew you'd stay there for sure,

But on one breezy Winter day, you spot on the horizon,
The looming black clouds, dark, menacing and slowly rising,

And thought what harm 'twould be to weather the storm,
So played you fate that day to shape the coming morn'.

Trail-blazing down that road with a shrill cry of the horn,
Down that ragged, lonely road, pot-holed and torn,

Chasing for the light behind the clouds, a divine sight,
Searching for the right spot in the sky that night.

Skies were opening, elements came crashing to the ground,
And in the lonely storm that night, your hopes drowned.

This was all it took to ruin your destined course,
Fool, you'd rue the day you drove like a horse,

For at the coming bend, as you struggled to turn,
The car slid swiftly, then it tumbled and it burned.

As you laid on the soaked ground and memories appeared,
The hissing rain slid down on a windscreen full of tears.
