The Great Divide by Levi Levin

The Great American Divide

America today has faded from

The America of yesterday

It’s now black against white

and white against black,

What happened to the days

when your fathers shot hoops

as boys?

And when your mothers set

together and played with their

toys?

When a homeless man was

one of us

And giving food to the poor

wasn’t a crime,

Those days are fading and

near gone

In America we’re singing a

new song

The Republican and the

Democrat are enemies alike

Aren’t we all Americans? So

what’s the fight?

It’s United We Stand and

Divided We Fall

In the land of liberty and

justice for all,

Join together as brothers and

sisters in the land of the free

or we will fall someday

longing for “I have a dream!”

Seems simple divisions aren't all that simple especially when what you see and hear ain't what it is that's said or meant. A lot of "ain't my job" or " ain't my responsibility" goin' round.

Thanks , thought-full words.
I find the font as interesting as the content here Levin. I'm afraid there is no going back now. I feel forward is the only answer. We have to focus on what works for us today. Apparently Historic success doesn't apply. This is a piece that makes you aware but fearful. Well written sir!

Thanks so much John, I appreciate it!
It's tragic that this was written a year ago but the message is so present. Things haven't improved but got worse, in all countries acceptance of each other seems to be an unreachable goal. Despite every history class being taught that famous speech of equality the message seems to fly over our head, for our view of religious crises and in our treatment of the person sitting next to us.
I've got to ask is the different font for 'ime' an accident or am I missing a awesome message there?

i agree...this is not the land that our fathers gave to us...not the one we tried to give our children ...without prayer i would despair ... no doubt about it .. watching the insidious decline and demoralization of America over decades ...Nakita's shout still rings in my ears "we will destroy you from within" ... oh Levi.... i was about to "get started" ... the voice of your poem needs to be heard over and over again .. i appreciate it!

Thanks so much!
A piece that screams of acceptance in the wake of atrocity and despair that has befallen the great country , some might even call it the GRAND divide should things be discussed in hushed circles, a great read, well done.

Thanks Thomas, I'm glad you liked it.
Your compassion for your fellow-country men of different colors and creed is very appreciated. The world will rally stronglly behind you in your efforts to uphold equality and justice.
