Chapter 7: Director’s Test

Chapter 7: Director’s Test

A Chapter by Sera J. Lee

Cole Chalet was walking quickly down the halls, after being summoned to the Director’s office. No reason was given by the sudden request, just that he needed to come quickly. From the sound of Mrs. Kelsall’s voice, it sounded urgent.
Cole opened the doors to the office and saw Mrs. Kelsall sitting at her desk, biting her nails. She seemed nervous and she looked up every now and then to look at the Director’s closed doors.
“Mrs. Kelsall?” Cole asked, tilting his head in concern.
Mrs. Kelsall jumped and looked up. She then quickly stood, practically toppling over her pencil holder. “Oh, Mr. Chalet…” she said, catching it. “Director Killian has been waiting for you. You may go in.”
Cole smiled and nodded. He walked to the glass doors and opened them, surprised to see the dark brown hair of a girl he knew too well. Killian had stood to his feet and smiled as Cole walked up to the desk. But Phoenix didn’t even look at him.
“Glad you could join us, Commander Chalet,” Killian said, still smiling.
Cole bowed his head and stood up properly, his hands behind his back.
Killian sat back in his chair, back to business. “Your probably wondering why I called you here,” he said. He motioned to Phoenix. “And why Miss Volante is here with us.”
Cole glanced at Phoenix. “Not really, Sir… I learned to just go along with these things now…”
Killian laughed, but soon his expression turned serious once again. “I asked you here because I have a request for you.” Cole lifted an eyebrow. “I want you to test Miss Volante and see if she’s qualified for joining GALACTIC…”
Cole looked a bit shocked at the sudden request, but he did not speak out of complaint. In fact he did not speak at all.
“Is there going to be a problem with that, Commander?” Killian said, looking over his glasses.
Cole breathed in and stood up straighter then before. “Not at all, Sir…” He glanced over to Phoenix to see her rolling her eyes and sighing. “I’ll begin right away.”
Killian smiled and sat back in his chair. “Glad to hear that.” Killian turned his back to the two and said, “Oh, I almost forgot. That wasn’t the only reason for asking you here, Commander.”
Cole lifted an eyebrow, and so did Phoenix.
“I have a new mission for you,” Killian said. He turned halfway and looked at Cole. “That is if you choose to accept it. I might add that it has to deal with a certain friend of your’s…”
Cole’s eyes widened.
Kaiden. He was the mission.
