Writers CreationA Poem by Nathan ThompsonI press a little button, for a second, nothing happens. Then a sound, a whirling sound, as the CD-ROM scans for software. Then the screen lights up, at first it is nothing but a different shade of black, then a loading bar. After a second or two, the loading bar disappears, and a screen with little icons appears. Then a background. Then nothing, the computer waits for you to act. It is ready to take my orders. To do my bidding, whatever that might be. I double-click Microsoft word and wait a couple of seconds as a blank screen loads, I run my fingers over the keys. Wondering how to start, dismissing one idea after another. Love…no, hate…no, fear…no. I choose a subject, and start to type, slowly at first, but with each word comes new ideas. My fingers begin a complicated dance over the, keyboard, words appear on the screen, straight from my mind, down my arms, through my fingers and over the keys. Characters are born in my brain, and as I dismiss them, they are sent back, but never forgotten, for they can be used again, the next time I choose to write. Conversations are made. Places created, buildings built, trees planted/ Through my minds eye, I can see it all happening. I can see, my creation flourishing. My ideas brought to life before my eyes. All too soon I am finished, whether it takes, a few minutes, hours, days, weeks, months or even years. It is never long enough. I finish with an epilogue, or sometimes even a simple The End. I move the mouse to file, press save as, type in my stories name, and press enter. I shut down my computer and turn off the screen, and when it is late, I sleep, and dream new stories.
