What Mortals Must

What Mortals Must

A Poem by Nath
"

Fragment

"

What fateful future, it is man’s destiny to die.

Born to follow the grim reaper's gentle guide

At least we're well accompanied and safely led

On strange routes to the realms of the Other Side,

Into the land of the deceased and dead.

We will each meet our end in time, as all mortals must.

When our time comes, we shall cast off the carnal shell,

In which our spellbound spirits are doomed to dwell,

Escape from this cage to which they are confined,
We'll break the spell, leave it to decay, leave it behind.

Rejoice, dear friends, we shall do so happily!

It is no loss but liberation, so we should shout with glee

When our prison, this multi-cellular cell, is destroyed,

And we're released into the nothingness, the eternal void

As Master Death comes and commands us to be free.

The empty vessel in turn may rot and turn to dust.

Its flesh food for the worms, to them a feast, feeding on

What decay doesn't take away, until but bleak bone

Is left of the remains that are soon to be crushed

Till a handful of human dust is what remains of us.

Fragment, unfinished, but I'll stop despairing over the last verse and just leave it as incomplete as it is for now. Might add the missing last one whenever.

A very optimistic look upon mortality. No loss but liberation. But in the eternal void ? So no afterlife...no heaven in any shape or form. I wonder, how can your ego stand its future demise ? I am struggling with this.

If you find the time please read Angst and Catharsis, my two stories on existential fear.

I will follow you.
