India is well known for its educational institutions. The quality of education in the country has been appreciated since ancient times and even today, it is a major draw for students from all over the globe. The variety of courses and the large number of reputed organisations spread across the length and breadth of the country is the major reason why the Indian education institutes are popular among foreign students.

Talking of students within India, there is a wide range of options available for higher education.

While engineering and medical sciences have been the dominant fields of study for the past few decades among Indian students, new areas such as biotechnology, microbiology, biochemistry have surfaced. Hundreds of engineers pass out of Indian colleges with a Bachelor of Technology degree and there is cut throat competition for jobs. The huge advantage that these courses offer other popular courses is that they are still open to exploration and research in terms of employment, while subjects such as engineering and medical studies have hit the saturation point.

However, completing a biotechnology course or holding an M.Sc in Microbiology can help you get a lucrative job with the biggest names in industry. Students who have taken biotechnology course can find employment in the following sectors:

··   1. Research

·     2.Lab assistance

·     3.Marketing

·     4.Business Development

Biotechnologists find maximum employment in areas such as environment conservation, chemical engineering, quality standards checking, and forensics and drug discovery.

Huge companies such as Hindustan Lever and Cadila also hire skilled biotechnologists in their labs.

Microbiologists too can find jobs in similar arenas. While undergraduates can join in as lab technicians and lab assistants, M.Sc Microbiology degree holders can join organisations as lab supervisors, assistant production managers, research assistants and analysts in quality control. For those who hold a doctorate in the subject, job profiles include those of executive in research and development industries, production research officers and managers of quality control.

If you are planning to study ahead, make sure you are careful about picking the right college. There are a few things that you should keep in mind while choosing the college:-

1.     Understand how strong the college is in terms of infrastructure and quality of education. The college should have adequate space in its classrooms, comfortable hostels, workshops, space for extra-curricular activities etc.

2.     For those pursuing biotechnology courses or M.Sc Microbiology, it is important that the college has well equipped laboratories and enough space to accommodate all students.

3.     The faculty members are an important factor too. Read a little bit about the professors and visiting faculty members before you make up your mind.
