What where you thinking?

What where you thinking?

A Poem by Natalie C
"

Sorry guys this is more a rant than everything else. One of my friends was hit by a drunk driver while crossing the street this week and died. So Im a bit cut up about it, specially after visiting with his family.

"

It only takes one second
To change the lives of so many
One selfish irresponsible act
To make a mother cry
And leave friends wondering why

Today I sit here
And I have no words for the anger
That brews inside of me
No tears to express the sadness,
That awaits his family till eternity

Dear Sir, what where you thinking?
Where you thinking at all?
Did you think that today
You where going to change someone’s life?
Did you even see that far ahead?

Did you ever think

By drinking that one last glass

You would forever take away

Someone’s loving soul?

Did you?

Tonight his baby will be sleeping in his little bed

Never realizing that his father

Won’t be coming home again

He would grow up

Not remembering what a great father he had

How do you sleep at night

Knowing that a baby is never going to know his dad?

Can you even look in the mirror

Without seeing a murderer

Now forever condemned by a careless act?

Thanks to you, his wife will be forever scared

You have robbed them of a lifetime together

Robbed them from their vows

And in the end all that she has left

Is a picture of a husband, once so great

At his funeral, we sit

Wishing you could be here

To experience first hand

The sorrow you have caused

Words cannot even begin to express

The anguish you have created

So I am left with one question only

‘cause my minds a blank a right now

But I have to one last time

Hoping that you can answer it…

I am so sorry for your loss. As you probably know I recently lost my son due to a drunk driver. It tears you apart. I wrote so much about it in my poetry, losing my poems, is like losing another part of him. Please be strong. If you ever need to talk, I'm here. And thank you so much for sharing your pain, writing about it will help you get through, it did for me anyway. Lots of love, hugs and prayers. You should send this to MADD mothers against drunk drivers. Debileah

Reviewing this piece seems a bit inappropriate considering the weight of the subject. But... I like rants and this is a subject worthy of one. It doesn't read as overly angry, but more concerned, saddened and disappointed. This thoughtfulness elevates it above a mere rant. The first stanza sums it up well... it is a selfish and thoughtless act. You said yourself you have 'no words for the anger' and, although your feelings cannot be summarised in words, this poem goes a long way in communicating these thoughts. I hope writing this helped.

I'm so sorry - I hadn't seen this until now. Very emotional piece and can't imagine how you feel but this brings me a small way towards it. x

This is very emotional and although it is a rant, it is still written beautifully. Your friend will be in my prayers as will his family. I hope some how a copy of this ends up in the hands of the driver.

Sorry for your loss. This deeply impacts so many people. A question that forever is asked of so many. I hope one day he can answer this for himself truthfully, so he can get some peace.
Prayers are with you and your friends family.

This was truly a heartbreaking read. I think people that get that wasted are looking for a way to escape their own pains... if only for a moment. But climbing behind the wheel can and does bring on a whole ocean of new problems. And so often people lose their lifes to such carelessness. I am so sorry for your great loss, Natalie.

Coming from someone who lost a loved one to a drunk driver this poem really hits home for me... those questions as to why someone could be so stupid and ignorant... and as to why the person always driving under the influence lives while the innocent bystander dies... a very gripping and powerful piece my friend and I send my condolences and deepest regard.

I am sorry for your lose...It hits you so hard that you can hardly ever come out of it completely.
The lines are so very true , i really wish those people were just a bit more careful and thwarted the pain that he had inflicted not just on one life but all the lives woven delicately with that life.

Just one correction, "What where you thinking?" would be "What were you thinking?"
Great write.
