UnpluggedA Poem by Mikel BranchI've always loved music. ANd I love elements of jsut about every genre I've come across.Thump, thump, thump, thump The beat is strong I can feel it loud and clear Pulsing, beating, beckoning My feet move in a rhythmic cadence one in front of the other. Headphones in, head down Peripheral full of things not quite seen Faces blending, foliage dangling Growing, blowing from the breath of the passing cars A million songs pass through these ears each with a different point of view The voices fade in and out sometimes they're words others just an added instrument to the fray Willie sang troubles The Wilsons about cars, girls, and surfboards Mr. Barrett was fucked up from the get-go I hear you Marshall Mathers and Mr. McRae And you too Maynard. Lester Flatt just came to join in too. All of them wondrous Playing individually Or all in unison Like a great Symphony of genres They come through my headphones Deliberately poisoning Promises of euphoria met with a hearty hello
and a hug Embracing the music something I've always treasured feel it... live it... open your mind to every beat every rhythm don't discriminate because of your predisposition to dislike Louder LOUDER FASTER slower It almost hurts but I can't seem to pull the headphones from my ears Happiness, pure joy! Sadness, oh what despair! Wrapped up and compiled as a package on this little device But alas I must "turn it off" for now Work to do People to please I can't find the device I NEED TO TURN IT OFF!! Follow the wires from my ears Slowly steadily make my way to the source of all these wonderful bars Found the end give a quick tug OUCH!!! There is no device. Just a wire coming from my chest With old dressings which need to be changed I can only grin as I realize I can never unplug Music is in me. © 2011 Mikel Branch |
