The Ballad of Dave CoutierA Poem by Mikel BranchTrue story that I decided to put into this format versus narrative. This is my tale of ole Dave Coutier And how we traveled together day after day With the fun and the bars and the weed and the girls and the beer. It was '94 when we first met 'twas a time in my life I would never forget We were barely 18 at the time and we had no fear. Ole Dave was a bit more older man And apparently was Canadian But nothing could stop him from coming back to Tennessee. He didn't say much but when he did He kept the whole room interested He wound up being a great companion to me. Since we were all underage but wanted to drink We asked ole Dave to be our missing link To allow us to acquire the wine and the booze. The first time we tried was sort of met with a smirk We didn't even know if it would work But Dave tried it 'cuz, hell, we really had nothing to lose. Out the Kenjo he walked with that first 12 pack Then we tore up the night drinkin' beers in a sack We raised hell from that point to the first shining light of dawn. Night after night, Dave helped us get ripped The fun we all had, you just couldn't script But drinking at home all the time was sort of a yawn. We got ballsy with Dave one night in the car And decided to try our luck at the bar And what do you know, the ole gal fell for Dave's charms. At the Knoxville Hooters, we drank and we ate Bottles covered the table, bones piled on the plate We got so sick but to that there should be no alarm. The fun from the parties got a bit old We all split, some enlisted, others enrolled But ole Dave stayed true and was always right by my side. At 20, Dave's tricks didn't work anymore Nope, not at the bar or at the liquor store Dave was let down and that was something that he couldn't hide. I tried to stop him but he wanted to go And there's something else that I thought you should know I was as much a part of Dave as he was a part of me. Me and Dave never met face to face We didn't even live near the same place Dave Coutier was just the name on my fake I.D.
