Destined Blessings

Destined Blessings

A Story by Nami FallingDewdrops

She had always loved him. There was
something, some kind of magic
wrapped in the specs he wore that
kept her eyes glued to his fair
complexioned face.
There was nothing special in those
thin-steel rimmed specs but still she
loved to peek at him with his specs
intact, resting on his button nose.
She was not the kind of girl who
would stalk and chase boys, who
would roam around in the college
campus and flirt with boys, she was
an exceptional. A nerd she was! A
beautiful nerd indeed ! Her thick-
rimmed spectacles impeccably
covered her large ebony black eyes.
One would always find her immersed
in some or the other book,
discovering a world of her own where
she could fit in.
Love for her was an alien thing. It
held only one meaning in her life-
parents and books. Never had she
imagined that someone like him
could do wonders to her.
It was one fine December morning
when she first spotted him, laughing
and giggling with his pals. His
hands rushing down his perfectly
spiked hair and lips curved into a
charming smile. She noticed him, he
did not have a tinge of knowledge
about her existence. He was her
senior, she found out one day.
She was ridiculed when she went
about finding him. The wannabes
mocked and laughed at her calling
her names. But she didn’t care. She
didn’t pay any heed to their
worthless and baseless insults. She
stared at him all day along, stealing
glances unaware of her own feelings.
Her heart raced as he walked past
her, yet she couldn’t figure out. Her
heart fluttered when he smiled, yet
she remained unaware. Her lips
stretched into an ear to ear smile,
still she couldn’t figure it out. His
hands accidentally brushed with
hers, her heart skipped a beat .
She then knew it was love.
She was elated and enthralled but a
strong realization soon dawned
upon her. He wasn’t encrypted in
her lines of destiny , she reminded
herself. It was a one-sided love, she
accepted this cruel truth. As days
flew by, she diverged from the path
of love which only promised her
pain. She took a different route, the
route which led to her best friends-
her beloved books. This time as she
drowned into the ocean of words,
she visualized herself and him. She
saw him dancing with her, she
contemplated him proposing her,
she imagined him making love to
her, she dreamed of him loving her-
truly and deeply.
Some more months passed by, one
fine day she caught him without his
specs. This thing disturbed her. It
left her restless. A feeling of
uneasiness swathed around her
neck, it choked her. The next day
she collected the broken pieces of
her courage and decided to speak to
him. As the bell for the lunch rang,
she dragged her shivering feet
towards the canteen. She scanned
the whole cafeteria and there he
was! In a corner, isolated from
everyone, sipping his coffee.
With trembling hands and a
palpitating heart she strolled to
him.
“E…exc…Excuse me?” He lifted up
his lids and fixed his eyes on her
face.
“Yes?”
“You should wear your specs often.”
She forgot about all that she had
practiced to say. No pleasantries
exchanged, no smiles shared, just to
the point! She hit the point directly.
“Eh? What?”
“That’s all I wanted to say.” She
turned to leave.
“No stop! I know you love me.” Her
heart raced and blood gushed down
her veins with a matchless speed.
“N…Nooo..It’s nothing like that.”
“I’ve seen you staring at me…
looking from the corner of your
specs.”
She kept quiet. She knew she had
been caught.
“But I don’t love you… by the way
what about my
specs?”
“I know you don’t. Specs? I don’t
know, they’ve always attracted me
towards you! So I was just a bit
concerned when you left wearing
them. You look better with them.”
She managed to speak.
“That’s funny!"
“Can you do me a favor?”
“Yes sure !” He smiled, his dimples
prominent.
“I know you can’t ever fall for me…
but just in case if it happens, start
wearing your specs again. Please?”
“That’s weird! Anyways fine! If you
insist then I will. But mark my
words there’s hardly any chance for
that.”
She smiled and turned back to
leave.
After that day, they never exchanged
a word, never shared a smile.
As years passed by, they went took
different paths to pursue their
career. While he slowly started
having feelings for her, somewhere
miles away from him, her love was
getting stronger.
After a decade, destiny brought
them together, yet again. This time
with a purpose of binding them
together for the ages to come. He
stood in front of her with his
charming smile and specs placed on
his button nose.
She smiled for she knew he had
finally surrendered to her. As the
sun descended in the far horizon,
together, they walked down the
street framing their future.
