The Lamp, The Whale, and The Cassette Tape

The Lamp, The Whale, and The Cassette Tape

A Poem by Jean Calvin

Once upon a time
There was a magic lamp buried in the sands
Long forgotten, Since even the sands themselves had been forgotten.
But it so happened that a traveling merchant rode past the lamp,
Noticing the glitter of the lamp in the sun he stopped to examine it.
After picking it up he quickly jested to himself "This is surely a magic lamp!"
And with humor he spoke, "Oh magic lamp!
I have traveled to and from across the world and seen all it's wonders,
Will you grant me some new unseen wonder?"
He quickly rubbed the lamp, and tossed it over his shoulder while laughing.
And he continued to ride through the sands.

Soon after the merchant disapperaed, smoke began to rise out of the lamp,
The smoke soon revealed a magnficent whale in the sky.
Out of it's spout arose a tape,
Which out of it came ribbons, Producing notes and waves
For the whale to swim through.
Each note and wave that the whale swam through
Generated a new and harmonious sound,
Echoing across the sands
Forever more.
