The sailor and the stranger ------By Najet Adwani/ Tunisia/

A Poem by Najet Adwani

When the stranger,
reached the beach,,
the sailor was sending
his voice to heavens
To his sad harmony.........
a slim flute
was dancing;
his fingers caressing her fragile
body,
increasing her pleasure,,
she writhes as a gypsy dancer,
attracted by a hymn
coming over the south wind
wings......
On the sea,
in front of his nostalgia,
a happy small
boat was continuing
to flow...
The stranger
slows her pace
not to frighten
the passionate seagull..

After reading the poem a couple of times and picturing it in my mind, I more realise the strength with which the so descriptive words-like the sea, the boat and the seagull-speak of themselves. The concept in which they are employed is much more than simply metaphorical. This is not only a poem writen for the sake of writing. There is passion here-mixed with sadness and expectation, but not so explicitly mentioned-which the poem almost shouts out from underneath this poetic serenity.

I think, that in that sense, I can hear the same voice that I found in the other poem-A child's scream-that voice trying to give a more subtle message with a clear and open voice. Poetry contradicts reality in such a fascinating way! A sweet dream, a reverie, a stream of nostalgia flows through the lines. The boat offers its own characteristic reality as it sails and reaches the beach.

This is one of the most beautiful poems written about the sea that one doesn't come upon everyday.
