Seasons

Seasons

A Poem by Najam Us Saher
"

Life has many seasons

"
SEASONS
Pleasant weather makes me cheerful,
Sun's bright, spreading its rays on flora
And flowers bloomed.
Chasing butterflies with my little fingers,
That's when I knew, it was spring.
The rays of the sun were severe,
The breeze was no more pleasing,
It was intense heat outside,
Leaves faded from emerald green to pistachio.
All I wanted to stay at home.
Mother allowed me to eat ice-cream as much as I liked,
And told me there is no school.
That's when I knew, it was summer.
Sometimes the weather fooled me,
I played with shadow when the sunlight hit me
And later it was gone,
I noticed it was sunny and cloudy at the same time.
And water from sky poured down.
Blue sky was not to be seen,
Light flashed, it scared me and I cried.
Mother told me it was thunder
And one day it will stop raining.
I watched the drops on my window pane,
That's when I knew, it was monsoon.
Curled up and brittle, the petals of the tree were,
All the chlorophyll was lost,
They fell and untidied the lawn,
I piled them up, clutched in my little hands
And threw them up,
That's when I knew it was fall.
Trees stood bare while it snowed,
I played with the snowballs;
Admiring the mist arise from my mouth.
Mother made me wear warm clothes,
Saying it was very cold outside.
Sitting in front of the fireplace
And curled up with a quilt,
I snuggled in my mother's lap,
And she let me sink into slumber.
That's when I knew, it was winter.

Thank you for entering!

I really enjoyed this piece. I like how the seasons are sending signs to indicate their change: the butterflies of spring; the pistachio leaves of autumn, the ice cream of summer and the closeness of a mothers lap in winter. It's funny how the warmth of a loved one can conjure up the feel of a particular month/time of year.

I particularly liked the thought of your narrator collecting petals and leaves from the trees. That was, and still is one of my favourite things to do even now I am an adult. As always, there is hope in what you write. My only piece of advice would be to keep an eye on your tenses. There were some points when your sentence seemed to slip into the past despite beginning in the present; perhaps this was intentional... if so, I apologise. It was just something I noticed during my reading.

Many thanks,
Eliza

this is a beautiful poem and such great descriptions seen thru the child's eye with the comfort of his mother by his side

you are most welcome ...
Your poem brought back memories, of my childhood. Yes, as children time is often just 'now'. I love the way your child takes his cue from things around him. And his mother is always there. Lovely ending, and a very effective picture of the 'season' tree.

I am really happy that you liked this. Thank you so much :)
It is an imaginary poem in which you portrayed the characteristics of seasons. It also tells mother's love. Well written.
These lines are very beautiful
"I snuggled in my mother's lap,
And she let me sink into sleep.
That's when I knew, it was winter."

One can also feel emotions of poem in the picture of the tree that you have posted with text.
Thanks for sharing.
