A Bright Delusion

A Bright Delusion

A Poem by Naim Touma

A foreigner set about to fetch

A star to lighten his dim way

Inside his chest a passing wretch

Panting for a reviving ray

Sailing he met a grand beacon

He asked it for its exact name

In his despair his hope fell on

A fawning glare not to his aim

Walking he met a lantern

He stepped to throw a close glance

Pain and spite made his heart burn

The lights turned to a shadows dance

He stopped to catch his ebbing breath

He found a withering wick aside

He mourned for such a bitter death

The fool mistook it for a guide

A dove keeping afar the recluse

Asked him the reason for the cry

Finding the star is no abstruse

Look at the heavens and hither fly
