Meaning of a True Friend

Meaning of a True Friend

A Poem by Nabu
"

Just my view of friendship, and what it means to me.

"

Right now, I can only hope that you understand.

That I can only take so much, before I break into pieces.

My soul is old, even though my body has many more years to go.

The lessons that this life has given me,

the experiences that make me whole,

are not always in my control.

I know that with every passing moment,

I am one step closer to my death.

With knowing that, knowing that one day I will be gone,

I choose to make the most of this life.

My friends define me as fiercely loyal.

At a drop of a hat, I am there.

Yet there are those, that no matter how much I plea,

they choose not to answer my calls.

When I need them the most.

Still with that in mind, I am true to them no matter what.

As long as this body draws breath, I am there.

With the blood rushing through my veins,

I live for compassion.

I live so that I will be remembered with honor and love.

I treat all as family and friends.

Some call me standoffish,

some call me a fool,

others call me things I rather not mention.

But above all else, those who matter to me.

Know that they can call me friend.

With that, there is no boundaries.

To be true to yourself, and those around you,

is what makes you a true friend.

Wow. Someone who can be so passionate -- and self-deprecating -- about being a friend, is a good friend indeed. I love the contrast between these two passages:

"That I can only take so much, before I break into pieces.
My soul is old, even though my body has many more years to go.
The lessons that this life has given me,
the experiences that make me whole,
are not always in my control."

and

"As long as this body draws breath, I am there.
With the blood rushing through my veins,
I live for compassion.
I live so that I will be remembered with honor and love.
I treat all as family and friends."

Great work -- don't let them break you.
