Chapter 4: Feeling UselessA Chapter by NickWhy is it that things always get worse and not better?
Being not very good at feeling past energy I was no help, but luckily we had Krystal. I watched as she took deep breathes in the air, pacing. She stopped.
“This is going to be easier if I transform, turn around!”
I twitched.
“Um… about that.”
“What? Look I know you’re a queer and all, but just turn around!”
“Qu… Qu… never mind just don’t hurt yourself there princess.”
“SSHHHIIITTT I’ve been doing this longer than you’ve been born! Now turn around!”
I turned and awaited the yelling. 3… 2… 1…
“What did you do to me?!”
“I needed to take precautions. I’m still not sure if I can trust you?”
“What? I don’t go all insane when I’m wolf! I’m very controlled! You’ve offended me!”
“That’s not what I’m worried about. I just don’t want another fight to break out. You’re very aggressive for a girl.”
“Oh well… I’m not going to fight you so give me back my other half!”
“Hmm fine I’m putting my trust in you. Don’t break it!”
As I did before I laid my palms on her head and my energy began to poor into her mind. I unblocked the memory and I left making sure the wall was still secure. I turned around, my trust still with her. She transformed into a completely different version of the werewolves in the movies. It was kind of like a big fluffy teddy bear. (Awe)
“Ok before we go. Can I ride your back I’m already tired from the walk?” I said while I picked up her clothes.
She took a step toward me. And put her head under me and launched me in the air landing on her back.
“Yay!”
We began our way to the forest and I noticed something was wrong. I was facing the wrong way. I clutched the fur in front of me and wondered what part of her body I was exactly gripping.
“She let out a sharp growl.”
That answers my question… so as best I could I turned on her back and gripped the fur on the sides on her neck. The more and more she sprinted to fallow the sent I noticed that we neared the forest that Shelly said she’d be at. I can feel energy but I’m having trouble sensing who or what it is. We entered the forest and the energy got stronger but I couldn’t figure out whose it was. Krystal came to a halt and I saw the circle of salt. It was Shelly’s. I began to worry as I noticed the circle had footprints all over it, which meant there was a struggle.
“Shelly…”
“Shelly?” Krystal said in confusion.
“Yeah she’s my cousin…”
A chill ran down my spine.
“That’s whose it was!” I said in a loud whisper. I began to chant. “What can be seen is now hidden and what can be heard is now silent…” every noise we made after was slowly muffled out until none of our movement made any more sound. To make sure the werewolf understood what was going on, I rubbed the back of her head to catch her attention and made the be-quiet gesture. I pointed at the woods to show why I had done what I had done. As evasive as we could be; we made our way away from Krystal’s pack members. Minutes after, the wolf stopped and the hairs of her neck rose. She bore her teeth and I stiffened as I felt a different energy… the energy of a Vampire. I broke my spell and slowly we became visible and the sounds we made became known.
Krystal sent me a telepathic message. “It’s the leech!”
“We need a plan. Ok this is how it’s going down; you go fight and I stay behind to be your backup.”
She shifted under me and yelled “What! You such a ponany your helping me you a*****e!”
“I will! From behind.”
“What do you mean? How are you going to help me from behind?”
“Just trust me!”
“Fine! But first give me my clothes.”
I got off of her back and handed her clothing including the pair of sweats I lent her.
“I’m fazing back so turn around.”
I did as she said and turned around. I could hear the painful sounds of her reverting. The noises stopped and I was caught off guard by a heavy blow to the back of my head and I felt my face grind on the hard ground. I awoke moments later to Krystal yelling “That was a cheap shot I knew you guys were cowards!”
“It’s called strategy!” the vampire retorted.
I gained my composer and remembered what we came here to do. I began to get angry after realizing that again my face was messed up from meeting the floor.
“Ok! Let’s get this over and done with… This shouldn’t take long...” I said pissed off.
”What have you done with Michael?” Krystal shouted
“Who? I don’t know who you’re talking about.” The vampire said sounding puzzled
I swear at that moment a vain popped in my forehead. I clenched my fist and swung it in the air with aggravation.
“Why does no one take me seriously?” I growled
I guess actions speak louder than words. I aloud my body to drop into a cross legged position using my energy to slowly guide me to the floor. Putting my hands together as if praying, I began to chant. After a few seconds I abruptly stopped my chant and threw my hands in front of me, fingers spread out. My finger tips began to glow and with my index finger on both hands I drew the runes for protection.
“Thrisaz, Nauthiz, Isa, and Algiz. I send you fourth to guard her from harm and cut. The her I speak of is the werewolf mutt!
I continued with my chanting and concentration. She needs to hurry I can only hold this for a minute or two. I would have paid attention to what went on but this spell needed my full concentration. Moments past and I began to get nauseous. The fatigue got to me and right when I had let my guard down I was grabbed by my collar and pulled into the nearest tree. In a matter of seconds I was flipped over and hung from the tree by my ankle. It took me a while to figure out what was going as I heard the sound of my money that I had in my pocket fall out.
“Where did you get the rope Maria?” the vampire spoke
A young woman jumped from the tree and said with sarcasm. “Kid had it on him.”
“Rope?” I said in confusion
Tied with my own rope! Without a minute past and the rope snapped. The rope snapping startled me and just when I was about to hit the cold ground. I felt a soft vibration hold me and lower me down. The energy felt very familiar… Elaine. As if out of thin air, Elaine and her coven member Susan came from out of the bushes. Susan is about a head taller than Elaine, straight black hair, with white almost pale skin and the darkest eyes I’ve ever seen. As they stepped out you could tell what type of person Susan was. She put her hair behind one ear with her long black nail. Her lips tilted into a smirk ready for a smart remark.
“Vampires? Gosh it’s been a decade since we’ve fought with some of these hasn’t it… Elaine?” spoke Susan
They both got into an attacking stance. The vampire named Maria glared and bore her fangs at both Susan and Elaine. Susan darted at Maria and hissed back raising and closing her hand. Maria abruptly closed her mouth as if she had just got lockjaw. All attention was turned as a rustling was followed by two of Kristal’s other pack members. The leader of the vampires I’m guessing is the one that held Krystal. The reason I say that is because he had the most power radiating off of him. As if trash he threw her at Jonathan. She landed hard on her back near his feet. Jonathan told her to faze back. She did as he said and he handed her his jacket so that she had something other than the sweatpants to cover herself. John and the head vampire continued to glare at each other. John’s eyes moved from the leader to the other vampire that we were fighting before. In defense the vampire that had his eyes still fixed on John got in front of her and bore his fangs.
“I’m better then that leech, I wouldn’t hurt one of your young like you did mine.” John lashed.
“It was self defense!” Spoke the still unknown vampire.
“None the less you’re in our territory.” He began to get angery
“We’re new here Maria, Evelyn and I don’t know the boundaries.”
“Ignorance! Your kind should be able to tell who’s this territory belongs to. Can’t you smell it? This entire forest reeks of wolf.” Susan said sharply
One of the werewolves spoke telepathically “Shut your mouth witch what do you know about territories?”
“Ok this is getting old mutt!” Susan stepped forward her and the other werewolf had a history of not getting along. I don’t know how they know each other but they did. She raised her hand. I could see her concentrate her aura into her palm. In an instant a flame formed and it grew into a large ball. Quickly she sent it at the two werewolves. There instinct of course was to move out of the way. Susan anticipated the move and stopped the fire ball when it reached near them forcing it to explode; nipping them in the back purposely making sure it hurt the loud werewolf more. In the meantime Elaine stepped toward the vampires and pointed her wand, a loud crackle was heard. The wand began to vibrate and a bright bolt of lightning was shot in the direction of the vampires barely missing Maria.
“Susan! Our plan was to fight the vampires not the werewolves too.”
“Well... The one with the big mouth gets on my nerves.”
Elaine gave her a look of agitation and continued the battle. The wolf that Susan was aiming for fur was a little singed. She threw her head back giving a loud obnoxious laugh. The two surrounded my Aunt ready to strike. I could feel that it was an illusion and she was in hiding. The illusion blurred a bit giving her position away. Maria and leaders attention reverted… they knew. I needed to help her I couldn’t just let her be hurt. I ran away from everyone’s attention. I allowed my body to fall once again I outstretched a fist. When it opened it a book appeared. This book was my book of shadows. I had written down an advanced spell that I had been trying to learn. With the other hand I began to draw the ruins I had copied from the family Grimoire. The ruins were old but powerful. The ruins began to glow a dark moss color.
“I call upon the power of the earth. Grant me the power to use thy weapon. Vines of Deter come forth.”
The ruins grew brighter and then solid. Grasping the ruins, I forced them into the ground. They sunk in the earth and I could feel the cold dirt vibrate. A large vine came from beneath and wrapped it’s self around my forearm. I grasped and pulled it out with all I had. Spotting the alpha of the vampires I attempted to whip the vine at him, but it had a different agenda. Instead of it hitting him it coiled around my body and tightened until the only thing moving was my head. I had made the mistake of trying to walk and fell on my side. Quickly I looked for the book and found it next to me. Sadly it was a good ways away. Acting without thinking I tried to bring it to me by inhaling the air in front of me, using magic to bring the book toward me. It worked… but not only did the book come but so did the soft dirt around it! I coughed and coughed until I felt I was going to start coughing up blood. I heard a chuckle above me.
“WH-What! How long have you been standing there Krystal?! Don’t just watch me! Get the book!”
Still laughing she bends down and touches the cover of the book. “Wait why don’t I just rip the vines off?”
“NO!” I shrieked
“What why?! It’s going to be easier.”
“The vines have a mind of their own! If they feel threatened it will spike like the thorns from a rose! Just open it in front of my face.”
“Oh… ok fine what page?”
“There is a picture of two vines.”
She picked it up and flipped through the pages.
“Are they supposed to look like noodles?”
“Just hurry!”
A familiar scream flew throughout the forest. I almost cried with the thought of what happened to my aunt. I looked at the page, concentrated and yelled “The vines of Deter I demand and dismiss!” I scrambled to my feet and felt a rush of air go passed me. That rush of air was intense power and anger, which I’m guessing was John. I whistled and assumed Elaine’s broom was nearby. I was right, I stood on top as before and rode it as fast as it could toward her. I passed Krystal and then the unknown vampire as they were rushing to the aid of their own as well.
“How could I have let this happen!!! This is my entire fault!”
I soon got to Elaine; she was lying on the ground in pain. Anger washed over me and I wanted so much to slaughter the other vampire they call Maria. I cast with my finger a strong jolt of energy at her, causing her to jump back, giving me enough time to pick up Elaine and ride the broom back to find Susan. Maria lunged at the back of the broom, tearing at the bristles trying to pull us down. I forced the broom to speed up useing as much energy as possible. I neared Susan screaming her name. I caught her attention away from the werewolf which looked almost completely bare due to the fire that Susan didn’t stop sending at him. Her robe was torn and I assume that the werewolf didn't let himself and attacked back. She saw the broken arm and the scratch marks on Elaine’s face. Immediately she glared in the far direction of the lead vampire and John. Swiftly she pointed in that direction and snapped her fingers but instead of the alpha taking the blast, Maria, who had been chasing after the broom, intercepted the blast as she passed by Susan. Being as close as they were, both of them took the hit sending Susan and Maria in opposite directions. With both wounded it made it easier to make sure no one else got hurt. I laid my aunt down softly to the ground and as I did before I floated to the floor and did the same protection spell as I did on Krystal, but to Susan and Elaine to make sure the leech doesn’t hurt them any further. Maria knowing the weakness of my spell lunged at me with the intent to kill. Susan sent energy at her pushing her away and keeping her at bay.
"How could it have gotten this bad?"
I never imagined this is how it would end… Elaine can’t fight anymore; Susan and I will eventually run out of power… It’s up to you Krystal.
“Kegan pay attention!” yelled Susan
“Sorry!”
I did as much as I could for protection but my power was quickly running as I’m not use to doing this for two people. Maria continued to lash at Susan but for now she couldn’t touch her. Maria became agitated and quickly attacked with more force. Unlike the other, this vampire seems to be more skilled and was able to scratch at the field with enough force to nip the long sleeve of Susan’s robe.
“Don’t give up on me Kegan!”
I tried to put more power, but began to tire and my vision started to blur. Elaine trying her best not to be useless sent what energy she could to me and Susan. But even with that my arms grew heavy and my body slowly began to give out. I fell to my side and could hear a burst of fire then the sound of a woman scream. I hoped that the sound didn’t come from Susan. I opened my eyes a little trying not to fall asleep. I saw the monster lunge at Susan while she was on the floor. However, Maria was stopped by the other two vampires. Fear quickly came over me. The thought of John and Krystal meeting a fate that was about to happen to us terrified me. But to my surprise the three were gone in an instant and I slowly lost consciousness. I awoke to feeling someone lift me and pull my arms around their neck. I felt their energy and fell sleep, because for some odd reason. I knew I was safe as Krystal carried me home.
