Nightmare of Loneliness

Nightmare of Loneliness

A Poem by NYYankeesFan79

A distraught man lies in bed at night, unable to sleep. Tossing and turning his eyes are burning. A sharp double edged sword of insecurity, and fear pierces his heart like a spear. The self inflicted wound is severe. He holds his emotion soaked pillow near. Worse for the wear, so full of despair. Internal damage so desperately in need of repair. Troubles, burdens and woes. Eyes are swollen closed. A dark shadowy figure emerges from the trees. Filled with fright, he flees. Looking over his shoulder, he's being chased. Agony and panic are embraced. A struggle for survival is being faced. The rapids of the river is raging. The end of the trail is engaging. Just as he feels safety is within range. The path begins to change. Becoming very strange. He is bawling. For help, he is hysterically calling. Suddenly he is falling. Landing in the river with a big splash. From the current he begins to thrash. Eventually he is washed ashore in a place he has never seen before.

Awoken in an empty field by the falling of a mist, he hears the sounds of a bell ringing in the distance. Feeling so alone and scared he follows the sound to the center of town. Everybody is gathering around crying. The town is in mourning. He asks some nearby people what happened. They don't respond to him, for some reason they can't see or hear him. A beautiful girl sitting under a tree catches his eye. As he approaches her, he notices she isn't crying. Her hair matches the color of the sun. She looks at him, smiles quickly then gets up and starts to walk away. He calls out for her to come back. Without turning around, she pauses and says I have to go. He walks over by the tree where she was sitting. There is a dagger nearby, and some initials are carved in the tree. He traces them with his finger, but when he does, they disappear. The bells chime louder, so he follows them to the center of town. Six men emerge from the church carrying a coffin, followed by all the weeping townsfolk. They proceed to the nearby cemetery, where they stop by an open grave. The coffin gets set in place. All the people come up one by one and place flowers in the open empty casket. Suddenly there is a loud rumble of thunder and rain falls from a dark cloud over the casket. The beautiful girl goes up to throw her flower in, at that moment a small beam of light tries to shine through the dark cloud. When the priest reads the last rights, the coffin begins to lower into the ground. The rain falls harder and the man begins to fade away
