I am From

I am From

A Poem by Nicole Rodgers
"

Just another 'I am From' poem.

"

I am from raspberry jam, homemade, never with fresh raspberries.

I am from lazy Sundays and busy Saturdays.  I am from sitting in pews, and crawling under pews, and seeing who smiles back.

I am from a perpetually sunny backyard that seemed endless all those years ago, but now seems too small for those memories.

I am from thunderstorms that excited me, rain that soothed me, and tornadoes that fascinated me.

I am from dancing in the summer rain and wallowing in the winter snow.

I am from "Gilbert" the tree I named when I was four, and his brother "Wilbert".  I am from tree climbing and scraped palms and cut knees.

I am from Gitchigumi where I learned how to skip rocks and race waves and climb boulders and feed seagulls.  I am from the peace that comes from the rhythm of waves crashing on that shore.

I am from two homes, one half remembered, the other full of memories.

I am from the songs on the radio and the TV someone left on.

I am from places I've never been that fill my dreams.  The dusty streets of an Arabian city.  The rainy moors of Scotland.  The busy chatter of markets in Thailand. Places imagined but never visited.

I am from "unforeseen complications" and medical terms that I can neither pronounce nor remember.  I am from my sister's hospital bed, and frustration emanating from Mom and Dad.

I am from hoping for better days.

I am from better days and joy.  I am from encouragement and love and most of all patience.

I am from hating the "in crowd" and proudly walking the wrong direction. I am from the best of friends.

I am from dozens of pets and hundreds of ideas, none of which seem to fit on the paper.

I am from brothers and sisters, though not all by blood.

I am from ups and downs, yeses and nos, thrills and chills.  I am from my family.  I am from the lakes.  I am from being the weird kid.

And proud of it.
