Ego Tripping

Ego Tripping

A Poem by Nicole Rodgers
"

An assignment I did for a creative writing class last term.

"

I am what little girls dream of being when they grow up.

Wonder Woman,

Ms. Marvel,

Black Widow,

Are mites at me feet.

I push and pull the tides

bringing life to shallow pools

on the rim of the oceans.

I defy the dreams and philosophies of Aristotle

of Socrates

of Descartes

of Newton

of Einstein,

because I created them.

My fears create black holes,

so dark and deep

that not even light can escape

my destruction.

My dreams ignite

constellations.

And pull the planets toward the sun.

Creating perfect balance

and allowing for life.

On a whim I sunk the ocean floor

to unreachable depths.

And pulled the highest mountains

to barely reachable heights

And people took them as a challenge.

Gems fell from my lips

as I created language

to express myself.

And people took these too,

my words,

forgetting their importance

spending them on frivolous things like:

yes'm

no sir

thank you for your time sir.

The path to hell,

they say,

is paved with good intentions,

with misrepresentations,

with understatements,

with smoothed over disagreements.

But they forgot

about the path to heaven.
