Beauty and Hatred

Beauty and Hatred

A Poem by Nicole Rodgers
"

A couple of poems I wrote that seem to fit with each other as opposites.

"

Beauty

Beauty is a lot of things

to a lot of people

But it is never perfectly defined

They say, "BEAUTY!"

"We have found it!

it is in the eye of the beholder!"

Which conveniently tells us

absolutely nothing

about the subject

Another will say:

"Oh yes beauty.

I know her well

I chased after her in my youth."

"Did you catch her?"

"I can't say I ever did."

Which again leaves us at

zip

zero

zilch.

So why are we

as people

men

women

children

able to point at a thing and say

"Of course!

There is Beauty.

We should've seen it all along."

In my experience beauty is a lot of things.

Beauty is leaves budding in spring.

Beauty is the warmth of the sun on your face

on a lazy sunday afternoon

Beauty is a child

splashing in the water

with a loved one

Beauty is the hush of snowflakes falling

for the first time this winter

It is the singing of birds

the wind through the trees

the lowing of cows

the gallop of a horse

Beauty is a mother

holding her child

for the first time

And a father watching in awe.

Beauty is a scientist

talking about his work

Beauty is an artist

absorbed in their work

Beauty is forgiveness

after so long

that it seemed impossible

Beauty is joy.

The Opposite

The scowl on DOCTOR Hendrickson's face

Was scarcely to be believed.

The corners of his mouth

reached past his chin

And the frown lines on his face,

(a very angry face I might add)

could have had a quarter sunk into them

and you'd never see it.

His posture seemed reminiscent of the words

NEVER

GROUCH

MEDDLING

and

ABSOLUTELY NOT

His hair

(normally neat and thick)

seemed so unkempt

that you would've expected

to find it

on a homeless man

It was understandable of course.

Finding a student rifling

through your

very personal

secret

special

drawer

certainly warrants such an

unhappy

unlovable

unkempt

unamiable

face.

But really!

I never saw

an uglier face

as the one I saw

after DOCTOR Hendrickson's

"I hate you".
