I Am LesbianA Poem by N. Nellanjust a little poem that somewhat speaks of my acceptance of self.I am Lesbian I see the puzzled looks I can see your thoughts turning, thumbs through books I can feel your questions prying, crowbars and crooks. Now Look I am not a fancy girl, over rated or under educated with an attitude, a slick word, and a grin: I am Lesbian I am a woman with dignity and self acceptance, fierce Thinking strong, long, hard, and painfully- pierced See I've walked this journey in flip flops, wedges and high heel, but those steps weren't for me I even tried being foot loose and then realized high tops and ankle low Nike's work for me Country fed and bred, light skinned and hard head In my state of mental darkness, my self hatred shed, finally I stood proud, eyes round, I am Lesbian Times I felt I was alone; no one else Eventually, one day I looked around, all I could find was SELF My heart began to swell, my mind began to dwell, the finally I yelled I AM IN LOVE WITH MYSELF Viewed as cocky, country drawl-city slang- the mockery I can remember when I looked down couldn't face the reflection of me living in fear of what I was told was wrong to be Who could I expect to be accepting of me? when I live in shame, pitifully Like pop up videos people were "Coming Out" I decided YES it's my turn, removing all doubt I am here and queer, my thinking began with confirmed feelings I knew then I AM LESBIAN
