AN UNREVIEWED POETRY...

AN UNREVIEWED POETRY...

A Poem by NEHA

It's a Saturday night
& he's working late.
Its okay...
because he says he loves me.
he returns home tired,
& opens the bedroom door,
I'm lying on the bed
with lots of pain in my head.
He unbuttons his shirt,
takes off his tie
I get up to help..
He holds me by my waist,
pulls me towards his body,
I say 'NO'...
I had cramps in my stomach,
"I'm sorry for having my periods"
on A SATURDAY NIGHT'!
I whispered into his ears
the state my body was in.
he laughed it off!
He pushed me onto
the bed & jumped on me,
as if making love to him
wasn't an option
but an obligation...
& he slept early that night,
I didn't...
because it hurt...
But love hurts right?
the next mornin' he wants tea in bed,
I request him to make it,
But he says no...
so I made the tea...
Because that's also what
love is about-
right?
understanding when your partner
says NO...
But yesterday night
my 'NO' had mattered less...
Nights pass into oblivion,
In the daylight his servant
& in the moonlight his wine,
I am.....

There  I am left to decay
like a crumpled paper-cup...
like a house of cards
one blow from caving in;
he robbed me off myself....
& left me to pass away
unnoticed
into an eternal silence...!

WOW! This is so intense, but it reads like a pretty little story. The contrast between what you’re describing & the tone of how it’s being said – this is genius! Clearly this narrator is chafing at being treated so badly, but the words go on saying what we’re expected to say in such situations. I love the way you use the most womanly of all symbols – monthly bleeding – as your opening stab. It really cuts deep the way you put everything. I’m still shuddering to remember some of the oafs I’ve known & put up with. I think we hate ourselves for complying more than we hate them for being jerks & your poem is a vivid word painting of exactly that (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

What a powerful writing Neha. I guess anyone in this world can relate to your words. He robbed me of myself so true... We women are very forgiving. Forgive as much as you can but always have a limit, i wish we set our limits and abide with them.

It is sad what we do to each other. We slowly steal away from a love, once sweet, to a place of hell. The story written. About a woman, becoming forgotten and having permanent wounds. A sad ending to the powerful and well written story Neha.

yes totally true
The brutal world of abuse.
Will it get any better, no?
If someone doesn't respect you.
Time to go.
