Hide and Seek

“3… 2… 1… READY OR NOT, HERE I COME!”

So far the sleepover had gone well. I had been planning this winter vacation sleepover for at least a month. Out of my three friends, Julie, Marco, and Fred, only Julie and Marco had been able to show up.

Marco and Julie had thankfully resisted the urge to strangle each other, my baby brother had been put to bed, and my parents were out watching one of their horror movies. My parents wouldn’t be back from the movie until midnight. It was just my easygoing 2-year-old brother, my two best friends, and me.

Right now we were in the living room of the three-story house. We all had an incurable taste for scary movies, even if we had to keep the sound low for the baby. Today we were enjoying a few short classic stories we all knew by heart. Each film was a short fifteen or twenty minutes.

Unfortunately, we had only gotten past the 20th one or so when we for once found ourselves bored. It wasn’t even ten O’clock yet, so we all agreed to tell scary stories with my flashlight. But even that got boring after a few minutes.

The cries of my baby brother finally reached me. Oh great, he’s probably having nightmares or worse. I shuddered at the thought.

“Hey guys, I’m going to go check on Brendan. When I get back how about some hide and go seek?” my proposal was met with open arms.

Brendan only had been having a nightmare, thank goodness, and had wanted his pacifier. With the soft sucking noises behind me I closed the door softly.

“Tee hee, you’re very good at that…” was that what I thought it was? I hurriedly turned back and quietly opened the door. Brendan was sound asleep. Of course it couldn’t have been him; he couldn’t say anything beyond mama and dada.

Who or what was that noise then?

I watched my back as I crept down the stairs. My friends hadn’t heard me coming and had a little fright. We all quietly agreed on boundaries for the game. We would only be on the first two floors, seeing as my brother was on the third of the three floors. The lights would be off, and the count was fifty. We each agreed on the big rocking chair in the first floor dining room as the starting point.

“Tee hee, this will be fun…” there was that little boy imagination running away with me again.

“Hey, did you hear that?” said Marco. Ok, maybe I’m not imagining this.

“Yeah, what was it?” Julie replied.

“It was probably just the wind.”

“But it’s winter, all the windows are closed” Julie was trying to make sense, “maybe we forgot to turn off the TV?”

We all raced back to the living room, and nothing. The TV was off and all the movies were in the cabinet beside it.

“Tee hee, you three are so funny… how about we play a game? Why not hide and go seek. You’ll be the hiders and I’ll be the seeker! 3… 2… 1… READY OR NOT, HERE I COME!” this thing whatever it was sounded very much like a lonely little girl.

Before we could think, we were all hurdling off in three directions. Since all the lights were off except in the living room, it was a madhouse.

“Ahhh!” that was Marco’s unmistakable deep voice. Seconds later there was silence.

“IEEEEEELP!” whatever unknown language it was, Julie’s voice was recognized.

Then I ran straight into a wall or a desk more likely. I stumbled and clutched my chest in agony. I felt like I had taken a punch to the stomach when there was nothing in it.

The lights turned on. I was in my dad’s study on the second floor. There to my left was the desk I had rammed into. The next thing I knew I was surrounded. I was in a bit of a daze from the desk, so I couldn’t see to well.

“Hey, I think he’s coming around” what, was that Marco.

“Yo, don’t touch me…” my voice trailed off and I finally grasped at a full-on headache.

“Fred, I think he’s had enough of our jokes. Let him sleep them off…”
