I spent my whole life building walls brick by brick to protect myself. Then, someone came along and showed me that it's okay to be who I am and they set me free and brought me to safety.

It is a curious piece in regards to the mixed messages that it conveys, which some might get hung up on, yet those are often the mixed messages we send ourselves and experience while in moments such as these. Even as we feel confined, we seek to confine ourselves further. Feeling the walls close around us, we shrink and build even more walls. Over time, people may knock on those walls. We chase them away with the scorn of mistrust as we have found we no longer trust ourselves. We may have answered the call in the past only to find that they did not offer the safety net we required at that point. Eventually we will either close ourselves off completely, having built so many walls around us that we simply fade from existence or we will find the strength to answer that call once more. Though the steps at first may be unsteady, we begin to look at building new paths instead of new walls. We see the opportunity for good instead of the opportunity for disappointment. The steps may indeed be timid upon the new paths we view or we may charge fully down them wishing to flee the walls we had so recently built. We should not forget those walls, for at any point along the path if we lose our will - we may find ourselves building walls once more. It is during this initial time, though we may rely on the strength of others, we need to find and nurture that strength within ourselves. No, we are not alone, and it should not be something that is considered as walking a path alone. We simply must remember that for many people, possibly including ourselves, we first built those walls not for ourselves but because of others. Nobody is worth building those walls up again, and we sincerely deserve better than to do that to ourselves.
I liked the ending, but I liked the writers note even more. I do believe however that no-one can truly save you but yourself, and it all begins with self-worth, knowing in your heart that you deserve love and are capable of love, and most importantly, that you love yourself despite all...
