Lie to Me

Lie to Me

A Poem by Princess Belle

Each day that ticks by
I feel paralysed
As I just watch helplessly
As my life escapes me
And drains away from me
I surrendered my heart to you
And now I’m lying here broken
Crying and lonely
Just lie to me and I’ll lay here
And hang off every word
Make promises to me
But in the morning you’ll be gone

Nothings in a nutshell anymore
You’ve cracked me open
And I’m shattered
I’m as broken and useless
As a blown light bulb
You’ve created this mess of me
You’ve emptied me into the streets
To run down the gutter and into the drain
To be mixed with the dirt and pouring rain
I don’t need your sympathy
I need something to hold onto and believe
So do your best and lie to me

False senses of security
Is the least you can do for me
After you left me in this heartbreaking state
All I want is to hear a happy ending
Where the prince marries his princess
And everyone’s happy in the end
I need you to make promises to me
Tell me there’s such a thing as forever
Not a me, not a you, but an us
I need to believe something in the dead of night
Something that will make everything seem alright
Even though in the morning
I know deep down you’ll be gone
But right now, do your best
And lie to me

A enjoy this poem. Whether the speaker is you, addressing someone in your personal life, or a hypothetical character, the poignancy of the repeated pleading for lies is moving. I particularly like the lines:

Nothings in a nutshell anymore
You've cracked me open

An effective image and clever wordplay. Watch the punctuation, though: It makes a difference if you say:

"Nothings in a nutshell anymore"

and

"Nothing's in a nutshell anymore"

(even though spellcheck doesn't like that last punctuation, I think it would clarify the line.)
