Grandma's ApronA Poem by Myrna H. RickardThis apron was designed to do many things! When I think back to Grandma’s time; (Guess you’d call it day’s of old.) I’m reminded of Grandma’s apron And all the good things it could hold. Sometimes Grandma would wrap it ’round me Then she would rock me sound asleep. Often she wiped my tears away, When I had cause to weep. There were many, many other things That her apron was used for too, And so I’ll try to tell you some; I remember quite a few. It carried eggs, fuzzy chicks, and sometimes Half-hatched eggs for the oven to warm; A well used holder for many things, So indispensable it was on the farm. Grandma used that apron to carry Winter apples from orchard trees, Harvested vegetables from the garden patch, Beans, roasting ears, and peas. That big old apron carried kindling sticks And chips to perk Grandpa’s fire. Often she used it to wipe her brow, When the heat caused her to perspire. It was surprising how fast that old apron, Could dust the furniture with care, When unexpected company came, And there was not any time to prepare. Yes, that wonderful old apron of Grandma’s Served so many purposes “back when” I think there has been nothing to compare With the apron Grandma wore ‘back then.’
