The Ladder

The Ladder

A Poem by Myrna H. Rickard
"

Steps leading to Heaven

"

THE LADDER

There are eight rungs on this ladder

They all have a different name.

When you start climbing to the top,

You will see they are not the same.

You start this climb with diligence,

It means persistence really works.

For you will never reach the top

Who lags behind or shirks.

The first rung is the step of faith,

Which means belief is there.

And virtue is the next one;

Take that moral step with care.

The third rung up is knowledge,

Thus wisdom, awareness and learning.

We need to know all present truth

If for Heaven we are yearning!

The fourth, of course is temperance,

Temperance in everything.

Self-control, self denial, and restraint

To us will heaven bring!

Because the next step is patience,

With an uncomplaining bent.

Longsuffering, composure and endurance

Are always heaven sent.

The sixth rung up is Godliness

If you attain this step indeed

He is spiritually discerning

And He knows you have a need.

You need the Holy Spirit

To reach the seventh rung.

For that one needs brotherly kindness

Which somewhat rules the tongue.

For if tongue, thoughts and acts are ruled,

By the Spirit from above,

You’ll see you’ve reached the eighth rung

That is Charity " which is Love!

Remember, you climb one rung at a time

Just like you live your days,

And if you live them like these rungs

You’ll give the Lord your praise.

This ladder is the character

Of Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!

And we must have this character too,

To live with the ‘Heavenly host.’

So when you learn this memory verse

Second Peter 1: 5 through 7

If you heed it line by line,

It will lead you up to heaven.
