Innocence Lost

Innocence Lost

A Poem by Aimee Mahathy
"

Reflecting

"

Plastic bodies and half beating hearts,
Glossy covers silently scream
Perfection.
You chose the high road,
And I chose the low -
Deprivation.
All for the sake of society.

When did the majesty of the sun
Fade into a pale pink glow?
And the mystery of ant colonies
Disappear with my family dinners?
All flowers are only plants now.
No faeries fly around my
Grandmother's garden.

I light my cigarette
And bandage my broken spirit.

What nourishment is there in a world
Synthetic?

This made me reflect too, in such a heartbreaking way.
This is beautifully written, good job.

Where does our innocence go once raped forever? Why do we have to lose it in order to become aware it was there, in our grasp? The feeling of that moment in which we realize that we are changed forever has been haunting me ever since it happened, and it still amazes me how no fanfare prepares you for such a huge turning point of existence. Most of the times we bid it farewell in the midst of the most prosaic facts of life, though that's exactly where we can find the core of its inexhaustible poetic appeal.
I found all of this once again in this beautiful piece of yours. The closing sentence condenses it all perfectly.

wow, this was really thought-evoking! the world does seem to be a rather dull place, dominated by society's protocols...the sensory language was perfect, and the diction was perfect. i loved it :)

What a powerful, sadly moving account of growing up and watching the world become only the pale plastic that it is... Your words make me ponder what we can feel and see... and what may truly lay just beyond our grasp that we somehow once saw.. Beautiful..
