Reaching with Drunken Hands

Reaching with Drunken Hands

A Poem by Aimee Mahathy
"

just about how sometimes we can find everything when we've lost everything else

"
Fall-
Way up high!
Backwards,
Like a carousel with an
Operator who's dropped acid
All night long.

Rise-
Way down low!
Open,
Like the first time
A baby sees, and understands.

I held your hand.
You didn't see.
You kissed my forehead
While I was asleep.

And then I fell
To the bottom of everything.
Then rose again
To finally see.

Author's Note

Aimee Mahathy
It's really a long story, but if you actually know me, you'll get it.
Basically it's about how when we think all hope is lost, and we've lost ourselves so much that we can't recognize our own reflection, and life is but a shell of what it once was... when we surrender to that kind of being lost- we can gain real clarity, realize some great things, find ourselves again and regain hope.
Don't know if that's how it happens for everyone, but that's how it happened for me~

The cyclicity of life is a theme well known to poets and philosophers through the ages, young woman. It is the insights that are forced upon us when we are at our lowest that permit us to climb and excel once more, and it is the excesses we indulge in when we are at our acme that bring us low once more! To be able, at yout tender age, to have such an astute awareness, just leaves me slackjawed with admiration. A truly beautiful effort, Aimee!
