Standing Up

Standing Up

A Poem by Aimee Mahathy
"

In this time of crisis, my mom won't let me speak. But I cannot sit here and do as she wishes, not with this.

"

My thoughts are not yours.

And they might clash with

All you ever have known.

But even then, I will not

Sit here and remain silent.

If you are all about America,

Then I’ll exercise my freedom.

To say these things,

And do what I need.

I will not sacrifice my life

To satisfy your selfish desires.

I long to fly, as everyone should.

Though I’ve never tasted

That sweet, sweet breeze.

Would you rather me give in

And wilt among the weeds?

Or would you rather swallow

Your pride and watch me flourish,

As I should?

Author's Note

Aimee Mahathy
I cannot say here, as some people I know might find out, what the big issue is. Just know that my life depends on it. Not life or death, but living my life. If I've told you, then you'll understand.
I don't pretend that this is written well. Perhaps I'll edit it later.
I just had to get it out.

Simply written, with a few tasteful images to reinforce the emotional tension an sense of practical accusation toward pride and arrogance and general numskullery. me likee.

You write well, and sometimes when we write and we don't want someone to know the entire truth, we cover it with a metaphor. I find it wonderful when someone speaks their mindoh the possibilities, the desires, the roads that haven't been discoveredespecially for someone as talented as youoh by the way you got my curiosity upI'm listen .smile

I'm 33 now, much more settled into myself, and getting back to it again. The previous about me is gonna stay for now, since it's still somewhat accurate and I need some time to figure out what to say .. more..
