Dissecting Perception

Dissecting Perception

A Poem by Aimee Mahathy
"

an exercise in feeling, truly feeling

"
Open your eyes, survey what's real
Dare to love, dare to feel
Dare to lie and to steal
Dare to pray or rebel
Dare not to believe in hell

Just cut the ropes,
Refuse to think
But see and smell -
Sigh relief

Plant a bomb on the tracks of the train
Knock it off-course
Only truth will remain.

So close your eyes, let out the sea
Dare to cry, dare to be
Dare to dance and to be free
Dare to paint or sit and write
Dare to opt for dark, not light

Author's Note

Aimee Mahathy
My close friend gave me some advice and this is my take on it. She told me that the Artist's way is to "dare to feel", whereas all I've been doing for years is training myself not to- to save myself from getting hurt. So I used that approach this last week with all my friends. And I realized what it was she meant. And it was beautiful.

Interesting. A bit sternly organized in structure, with it's repetitive 'dares', and little imagery, just lots of suggestive actions. still, interesting. and why is 'daring to feel' particularly associated with dark, not light?

I'm 33 now, much more settled into myself, and getting back to it again. The previous about me is gonna stay for now, since it's still somewhat accurate and I need some time to figure out what to say .. more..
