Your Side of The BedA Poem by James TincherThe feeling of sleeping alone when you miss someone. The night is full of emptiness as I lay here, missing the feeling of you next to me. I roll over to put my arm over your latent figure only to discover your absence has grown cold upon the covers. The smell of your hair still lingers on your pillow. I bury my face to gather just the faintest aroma. The impression of you is still in the mattress, the warmth of my hand, I feel as I guide it along the part of the bed that was once yours. It’s as if you were just there. My heart wonders, maybe she is up getting a drink or looking out the window to check on the weather. I hear a noise. I jump up to investigate, out of the bedroom I hurry. Into the kitchen I say out loud “baby, are you ok?”. No one is there. The slip of a wet bowl from the dishwasher had given me a feeling of rejuvenation from a love gone from me. As I stare down at the floor I say to myself “I miss you”. I turn and head back to bed. I crawl in and begin to count sheep. Your kiss crosses my lips. I look over and tell your pillow “I love you”. Goodnight my love, I hope you dream the sweetest dreams you can dream, as I fall asleep on your side of the bed. © 2013 James Tincher |
