"Hush little honeybee, don't say a word..."
A woman's singing voice gently fluttered into my ears, soothing me along with the quilt wrapped around my frame. I smiled, the corners of my lips curling upward.
I could feel the morning sunlight seep into my skin, causing me to shed myself of the quilt. "Well, she's up." Whispered the voice to another someone in the room. I giggled. The woman touched my forehead; her hands were soft and warm. Familiar. Almost instantly, I whiffed a smell of pancakes coming from the kitchen. I then was sure it was my mother. She stroked my long, black hair, a loving gesture only a mother would know. She continued to hum, pressing her lips gently to my forehead. I wished to open my eyes, but they were closed shut. Filled with gunk from crying.
"And if that mocking bird wont sing...
"Effy's gonna buy you a diamond ring..."
I wiped my eyes with the back of my hand, lifting myself from the pillow. I scanned the figure standing in front of me. Her hair was a rich, dark color, tied into a high ponytail flowing down her back. Her eyes were big, brown, and twinkling with some sort of excitement I couldn't point out. My eyes wandered the room. The bed underneath me was soft, and filled with tons of stuffed farm animals. This wasn't my room, and definately wasn't my house.
"Joey!! Get in here!" Called Effy behind her, fixing the left strap of her overalls. "Morning, sunshine." She says, kissing my forehead again, she moved her wooden rocking chair closer to the bed. My heart raced, as I gained the courage to speak to someone who I knew wasn't real.
"Where am I?" I said sternly, cutting my eyes at her. "Who are-"
"She's up?" Shouted another figure standing in the doorway, her hair was blonde, shoulder-length. A bright purple ribbon was tied around her head, and she was wearing a large men-sized shirt, with a dishtowel slung over her shoulder. I caught her eye, and her eyes dotted with...tears? She ran towards me, taking my head in her arms.
"Ohmygod...she's okay." Effy released her grip, making me extremely uncomfortable. "God, Jo! You're gonna kill her." I touched my own head, feeling the material of gaus wrapped around it. "Just take it easy." Effy says, shrugging her shoulders. "You had quite a fall on your way in."
" ...fall? "
