A moment of nostalgia for me, when I heard my dad say an old childhood joke unconsciously from the cartoon Land Before Time, reminding me of moments and memories as family treasures.
Family is hearing old inside jokes and habits from your childhood, repeated unconciously in your adult years and eventually, as bittersweet nostalgia as members gradually replace the roles of older generations, before finally resting in peace in the memory of those who know not their sentimental value.
My parents used to rent out the Land Before Time videotapes, and we watched all the sequels repeatedly. A character, Ducky, would say "yup, yup, yup!", and my dad recently said it to himself when he was thinking out loud one day. It reminded me those days (I'm 35 now with 2 kids) and made me wonder who would carry on old family jokes like these, or would it die with us.

i noticed your review on a poem of Cassie's and was hooked by your hippie looking avatar ;)) so came to read a bit ... read you About Me and must say it gives me a fine bit of chuckle .. :)
your write is like a journal entry musing .. i think it contains a lot of content that is worth pursuing .. in some quarters tradition it ridiculed and purposefully obliterated .. on many levels .. as long as generations repeat the songs, stories, jokes and musings that are family heritage .. they will continue me thinks ... your "Family Nostalgia" makes me think of the appointed story tellers in certain cultures ... they are fading there is no doubt ... as written history has replaced it .. :(

Yes, I call my pieces muses really, rather than poetry but it doesn't have that option. Full work title: Musings Under The Influence, so to speak.
I like your insight on it reminding you of storytellers. It's interesting coz I try to get my children to watch the same family cartoons and movies I did, growing up... it's surreal, it's like reverting to being a child again, and being your child self with your kids... it might be strange, but I feel close to my kids like that.

It is in my older years, having become a parent myself, and wearing the shoes of my parents finally... and seeing how my parents evolved in my eyes as people just doing the best they could, even when they failed many times... but because the love was always there, it transcends everything and brings understanding and gratitude, especially from my side.
I wish you and your family many more memories to treasure.

I am a child and a parent... and I find myself looking at things from all our perspectives. I will miss my daughter being her sweet, cheeky, brave self when she is a grown, worldly woman I have to set free and watch from the sidelines. Thanks Dave, it's a pleasure exchanging with you.

I like writing. I like smoking.
I like writing while I'm smoking.
Then I read what I've written the next day, as if someone else had written it.
It's better than therapy. more..
