The Ferris WheelA Story by MurielSurprising what can happen at a carnival on a blind date.I was fifteen years old. I worked hard all summer getting a dark tan and dieting to look good in my short shorts and tank top that I wore to the carnival that day. The guy I went to the carnival with was a blind date. My older brother’s girlfriend found him for me. I never liked that girlfriend of his and I think she knew it by showing up at the door with this guy who I am not quite sure anyone would have wanted to go out with. But I thought to not judge a book by its cover and went to the carnival anyway with this blind date guy and my brother and his creepy unlikable girlfriend. There were many fun and exciting rides at the carnival but blind date guy didn’t want to go on hardly any of them. He was picking the slow moving pathetic ones to go on. And thus we wound up in the Ferris Wheel ride line. I was really disgusted with this blind date. He was so boring and so full of himself at that. He had nothing really to say but complaints. So I just kind of pretended I was listening to another one of his fall asleep stories and started flirting with the Ferris Wheel carnival ride operator who was only a little older than me. Blind date guy was totally unaware of it all as he went on and on about some kind of creepy story of him having some kind of lesion removed. The carnival operator kept looking over at me and I looked right back at him. And then it was our turn to get on the dumb Ferris Wheel that I thought was just mostly for the elderly or small children being a rather bratty type of teen back then. The cute Carnie put me in my seat and seat belted me in. Then as my blind date was about to get in his seat the Carnie pushed the button to make it go up without even the bar over us. The blind date was hanging off the edge of the seat holding on for dear life. We were rather high up in the air. I said “Hold on. Hold on” and then the operator, taking his sweet time, reversed the Ferris Wheel to let my blind date guy sit down and get latched up. But of course neither one of us wanted anything to do with it all and left the ride. The Carnie guy didn’t look as cute when I left the area. I mean blind date guy was a bore and all and it was fun flirting with the Carnie, but to purposely make blind date guy almost fall off was not too funny. I never went on a date with blind date guy again, never accepted offers of blind dates from brothers dumb girlfriend, but I have been on Ferris Wheels and other carnival rides with dates, but never flirted with the Carnies again! © 2011 MurielAuthor's Note
