One Day in Existence

It was one day in existence,
categorically defining

the human spirit.

One day
that a terrorist hue was majestic as
the purple mountain majesty,
above the fruited plains.

One day
that the days and years since past, still feel
like a band-aid pulled off

too quickly.

It was

one day in existence.

But even now so many have forgotten that day, and the days immediately after. For months we could see American flags everywhere we looked. Americans were patient, compassionate, caring, gentle with one-another, respected one-another again... for a time. It was the America I grew up in and have loved all my life.
I miss that respect and compassion and caring, especially in this election cycle.

Thank you for sharing this piece.

Wow, Kel, you say so much--evoke so much--so eloquently in such a compact poem (which is, of course, your special gift as a poet). You make a unique point, or at least make your point uniquely...that THAT day was horrific, yet also showed the beauty and strength that made America--that still is America. Your second stanza is wonderful...the thought centerpiece of your work, in my view...very insightful and articulated so artfully. On a personal note, yesterday (9/11) in PA was a beautiful sunny day...so much like THAT day...the flags were flying at half staff around here. As luck would have it, I had to go get a replacement Social Security card (such an American thing to do). I was thinking, it's hard to believe it's been seven years. Thank you, as always, for sharing. You have a great heart.

The photo alone squeezed my heart, Kel. Your words following ...... each time, time after time, today's date presented itself in everyday goings on, I gasped. It was essential. It was grounding. It is still a lightning strike to my small world ~ as it should be. I wish I had the skill to express my chaotic thoughts in a fashion so powerfull and succinct.

You are a wonder to me, Sweetpea. I can only thank you for allowing me to go there with you holding my hand.

Love you so much,
j

A short poem that describes the tragedy so deeply. It's hard to do that in such short words. It's like a open wound that just sits there and festers. Nothing will ever be the same.

How perfectly you've stated how this day feels...for this is a wound that will never heal...forever to bleed within our hearts and minds; mourning the loss of those precious souls...forever apart of our legacy!
Such a lovely remembrance write!
