Alice in Wonderland

Alice in Wonderland

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

Alice in Wonderland

as a child

i don’t recall the golden book

ever read to me

of “Alice in Wonderland”

a tea party

of character allusions,

a white rabbit

the Hatter,

whatever would there be

to matter

but a rabbit hole

i fear i fell into

at the age of six

with the passing of my father

it obliterated my youth

of a man i cannot summon

the memory of

the scent of

the feel of

to conjure up

the timbre of his voice

in verse,

of pages turning with illustrations

capturing my imagination

of a girl named Alice

in Wonderland.

I heeded the memory of my father never having read the book to me, which became the muse I needed.

I like the turn (the volta) you found that changed this from recall to poetry.

Beautifully written poem. Enjoyed reading

This poem is obliterating. You’ve captured the essence of something intangible here. Being so, it’s hard to describe what I mean, but there is a longing that connects with the strictures of half impressions and memories of things we’ve lost
and really only had in the absence of

Love your analogy, John, especially of half impressions and memories lost. You've made an impressio.. read more
kissing a parent at a young age is so devastating… and i think that this book really helped her imagination and safet and endearment to know Alice in Wonderland as a safety blanket growing up… now a muse…wonderful and very personal….

Wow, that brings back the feel and smell and thrill of those little golden books. In my child’s mind must be treasure because of the gilded spine. Along with it the scholastic books followed by puffin books. Pardon from detracting from the poem however slightly. I don’t recall ever being read to but I know for a fact that this occurred on a regular basis. It was probably because it wasn’t the highlight of a day nor the most significant memory of those days. I do remember reading to each other with my sisters and brother. Again apologies, Kelly, as this beautiful poem has set me on my own sentimental journey 🙏🏻🕊

This is from your heart Kelly, grieving for the lost love you can't recall from memory.

You're so kind, Dave...thank you for being here!
Literature does often imitate real life. Thankfully, it can also tell us how to deal with its blows.

I believe I got my creative gene from my Dad. He used to paint. Perhaps he's coming through on more.. read more
There is such sadness when a little girl never gets to have a fairy tale read to her by her father.
The bond between father and daughter is so strong when it gets a chance to mature.
A beautiful poem with a hidden memory inside.
