good for a pot of chili

for oversized sweaters

and jeans stressed out

at the knees

 

a good day

for slouchy socks

and turner classic movies,

the film noirs in black and white

of Bogart

and Orson Welles,

the femme fatales

of Stanwyck

and Hayworth,

Bacall and Crawford.

 

a rainy day

custom made

for sleeping in

reading poetry by Dickinson

and Ezra Pound

 

getting lost within

the cerulean blue

 

of eyes

of you…

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Author's Note

Here is a list of the definitive roles of the femme fatales mentioned above. They are, in my opinion, the classic Hollywood Noir. Barbara Stanwyck for “Double Indemnity”, Rita Hayworth for “Gilda”, Lauren Bacall for “Key Largo”, and Joan Crawford for “Mildred Pierce”.

That's lovely, Kelly. Thanks for sharing, and I remember reviewing some of your writing in the past.

It brought to mind, you just being yourself; enjoying some time to yourself at home.With your own thoughts and leisure interests, to occupy you, whilst the rain outside - makes it a wiser option; than venturing out. And, one's mind can have a natural tendency to wander - during such situations.

As Jacob implied, this has a romantic vibe to it too.

Now, why would someone feel like expressing an "ode" to mere rain? Well, in this scenario, precisely because of your evident enjoyment and tranquil serenity; derived from having stayed indoors...

Rainy days bring out the best in me. I don't need a sunny day to be productive, I can cook dinner in a crock pot, bake bread or just sit around and do some reading. The rain is intended to slow us down, to take time out and rejuvenate the soul. It could surely benefit us all!

Yes, that all makes sense. Then, we tend to feel more rejuvenated and ready to go; for both working and - other more energetic pursuits! What Pete mentioned, I can relate to as well.

ho romantic...yes, rainy days are for these things...I will take Dickinson and Ferlinghetti to read...and definitely agree with the old black and white movies...
they take me back.
This poem takes me back but also reminds me that I still do these things on Rainy Days...some things never change.

It is a shame keyboards don't' have check marks, or an interrobang or a HEART. I used to belong to a wood sculpture club, we mostly carved faces in found wood. After a while, it became rather noticeable that everyones faces resembled their sculptor... the set of the eyes, the shape of the nose or mouth, the jaw line. Somehow, I find this poem to be something of a mirror... your poetic soul, your words, your imagery, your syntax,, your voice reflective of my own.
So now I'm thinking are all my favorite poets, my favorites because I write like them... I think yoiu might be my soul sister...

Sadly, not anymore. And my lease doesn't allow pets but I've loved a few good cats and one great dog. Had a few tabbys and grew up with one we simply called Puss...a Maine Coon named Sinbad, a spooky Korat named Smoke that acted human, a seal point Siamese named Sinatra..my Dog's name was Isaac and he was the best. I miss my beloved pets.

If everyone done this there wouldn't be any sniffles and coughs around the Christmas Dinner table and we'd all be a bit more chill with things too, instead of running around like frantic sodden scarecrows, searching for that mythical jar of cranberry sauce on Christmas eve.
