The Last Time He Brought Her Flowers

The Last Time He Brought Her Flowers

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

The Last Time He Brought Her Flowers

they were like strangers

passing in the hall
barely speaking
apologizing in whispers

she couldn’t remember when
the last time he brought her flowers
or held her without provocation

there was hesitation now
a disconcerting air,

consuming the want
devouring the need

too many winters had turned into spring
too many springs, it was
the last time he brought her flowers.

It's so sad when a relationship gets to the point in your poem. It appears not that he isn't the flower giving type but, something deeper has drawn him away. I sense we are waiting to hear the other shoe drop. I sense the loneliness in this poem yet, it is so nicely written that it imparts the feel of it. I enjoyed the read but it did make me feel sad for the writer.

I have felt that pain and it has been related in some of my poems.
These kind of silences are the worst, reverberating off the walls of the heart and mind ceaselessly. It's the worst kind of loneliness being with someone and feeling all alone, worse than being alone itself. These words fall like a hush within the heart. So sad!

Oh, those silent passings in the hall. The whispers of flowers speak of ways that seem far too sneaky for me, but for the right woman, I would make it my staple to understand the meanings behind every last one, whether she returns the same or not, though it would be wonderful. Always preferred the wildflower myself. Smooth Kelly, wonderfully smooth poem Vase? ~

Been there done that, sometimes been so male and stupid I thought that would make things alright. This is glowing and gentle and with just the right flavours of mood and missed opportunities.

Thank you for reading, Ken. It's good having you here!
Too many springs when life came in between...Almost turning them into strangers and yet somewhere they remembered the passing of so many springs. It takes just one step to break that hesitation, breach that gap and go back to that embrace. It would be sad if they walked away from something that I read as most special. The flowers must be waiting so eagerly....

I relate to your words very deeply, dear Kelly. Flowers have such a beautiful place in relationships and this poem has solidified that significance forever in my heart.

I like the emotions you’re trying to express here, sharing, it seems in ghe blame, if there is any, no bitterness but a melancholy approaching apathy.

This is very good. I enjoyed the read. I like planting flowers for my wife so she can enjoy them from our garden. I've bought her flowers too but the ones I've grown seem to have a more "personal" touch. I enjoy a gift someone makes me more than I enjoy anything from the store, a card, a poem, a story, a song. It doesn't have to cost anything so long as it came from their heart. But, maybe that's just me. The cards my daughter makes for me are the best.

Every woman should get flowers and not just on special occasions, but the unexpected too.

Too many springs...missing one I would consider too many. Kind of sad and lonely feeling but maybe not. It just could be she thinks about how long it has been since he brought her flowers because the new man in her life showers her with blooms. Hey...just trying to find the bright side. Nicely done Kelly.
