Awakening

Awakening

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

Awakening

the hush of morning

creeps clandestinely into

my stream of consciousness

with each cup of coffee

it rallies the effect

of a cigarette half smoked,

as a love unrequited.

big impact
Beautiful image
it is interesting how influential the female is in poetry and especially in art (painting)
I don't think a male substitution here would come close to having the same impact
Or perhaps it's just that I am of the wrong gender

Hello Kelly. I am loving the alliteration in this two stanza brevity. I am neither a coffee drinker or a cigarette smoker but can imagine the effects of not having the full package, so to speak. A cigarette half smoked or love unrequited is certainly not my cup of tea. Your chosen artwork really compliments your poetry so well. Have a lovely Valentine’s day dear poet.

“The hush of morning creeps clandestinely” Your poem is so intriguing right from the start and the finish leaves me feeling nostalgic. The image gives me an urge to puff on a cigarette ( not inhale) and let my mind wander wistfully, remembering past loves and a life well lived. Another stunning write dear Kelly.

I just had my first cup of coffee in four days after having the winter vomiting bug. Still can't taste much, but certainly hit the spot.
I remember those halfsmoked thoughts too, and maybe even hazily filled requited dreams too 😊

I hate cigarettes but I really liked this poem. And I'm not much of a coffee drinker as well but I totally get the allure and joy of it having once been a heavy coffee drinker in the past. Excellent work Kelly.
