A Hundred Words for Snow

A Hundred Words for Snow

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

A Hundred Words for Snow

it is said

the Eskimos

have a hundred words for  snow

imagine

an innovative ability to create

idioms in language

unknown to the academic world

but what  bewilders  me

is how effortlessly

it falls

without

                                a

           sound.

“but what bewilders me is how effortlessly
it falls without a sound.”

Like a picture a mental image can “paint a thousand words.” This piece brought back so many memories of winter snowfalls in Minnesota. Watching the flakes fall, especially the big ones, brings about a sense of peace like no other. It’s as if Mother Nature is trying to comfort us in a blanket of white. Your words have the effect. I especially like the ending where you spaced your words as if they were falling like the snow. Simply beautiful Kelly!

Happy New Year to you and yours!
in spite of those many words and its natural beauty, if that snow falling without sound could also fall without substance I would find it much more enjoyable.
we have had 3' so far and personally, I have had enough of this particular 4 letter word
Not meaning to be offensive if it came off that way

I am most appreciative of your review, Dave. I do hope the new year holds warmer days for you!
When you live in such a quickly shifting environment as the Inuit you may have to substitute those words for water soon with the polar ice caps melting. I enjoyed the read.

and yet the fluffiest snow will squeak underfoot. We have had a minor storm over the past few days ... not a lot of snow, but high winds and bitter cold...just in time for Christmas.
Warmer weather on its way later in the week.

Love the picture.

It is in the silence as the flakes fall that I find so captivating. Breathtakingly beautiful Kelly.

This is a cool poem. See what I did there with, cool? I could have said cold but that would have been too on the nose. I love educational poems. You taught me my first thing about Eskimos. I feel like delving more into them.

I once saw a video of a thunder snow storm and was completely in awe!

I wish I could hug you! I really do. Thank you, Nev!
They know many words for snow but do not use them often…because snow is always there…it is in their blood and in their spirit….no need for words…a very creative poem, with much interest and information.
