Long Distance

Long Distance

A Poem by Kelly Scheppers

Long Distance

i miss the two a.m. conversations

we had on the phone…

whenever my end would go silent

he would say, “talk to me…”

then suddenly it was as if

the miles and space between us

and the circumference of the world around us

was obliterated within

the exaltation of a sigh.

You don't post anywhere near often enough Kelly, but on those occasions when you do .. You invariably remind me of the reason why I fell in love with poetry .. Neville x

I'm finding myself quite flattered that so many are able to relate to this. What a feeling! Thank .. read more
I've had those phone calls myself only not so late. That closeness to someone is hard to forget.
They might as well be there with you. It's the serene touch and the smell that's missing, but the complete focus on them lasts.

Good poem, Kelly.

...thanks, Tim! It means a lot to me having your presence here!
Sometimes it difficult to use words on the phone, easier face to face... but long distance is tough and this conversation seemed to end with a kind of raw silence; as if perhaps there were no more words to be said. It does explain in sorts, the relationship in this scene. Short, but one gets the picture of it with your words. Perhaps in the end the two become one; that's left to the reader to decide.
Nice!
Best, Betty

I think you aced it! the odds are tough...
you're very welcome!
A long distance love affair is not easy, but as long as you can still talk - across the miles - love has a chance of survival. I can relate to this poem. I once had a girlfriend who lived in Germany, and I live in the U.K. so it was problematic. We slowly drifted apart, alas, but I'm sure some people do make it work. A nicely expressed poem.

It's so cliche to say, but I guess as long as there's a will, there's always a way, right? Thank yo.. read more
Hey Kelly, been a while. Glad to see you can still remind us that romance is still very much alive in this world. God, we need that. I think this poem is not just romantic, but hopeful. Things can be beautiful at long distances. I really like this one. CD

It is great to see you too! You are very welcome!
Damn, I wish you would post more often, Kelly...
there is such heart and depth in your writing...you just use such excellent phrasing
and vocabulary like you own them.
I remember these silences with my long distance relationships...that often meant
the person on the other end had run out of things to say, and the inclination to say them.

Words could never express the depth of gratitude I feel in reading this, Jacob. Thank you most kind.. read more
The lead up is so unassuming till the final line slams this home. Having lived away from my love on multiple occasions, I felt this one on a very intimate level. Great piece.
